In 2001, Mexico vs the U.S. was not considered a rivalry. So how can it be considered the biggest rivalry in Concacaf here in the states. While Costa Rica and Honduras have been huge rivals for decades. Which is really biggest "classico" in Concacaf.

i think it just means different things to different people. US and Mexico fans would consider their rivalry to be bigger and the reverse true for Costa Ricans and Hondurans.

But since the US and Mexico fight for regional dominance, WC history and the fact both are top ranked sides the fan in general would probably go with US-Mex

Hell, didn't Honduras and El Salvador fight a war in the mid-60s? That's my choice.

US versus everyone else.

Thanks for hating the US so much, it definitely improved our National team.

I called this the american paranoia...... it is not true that everybody hates you.... most of the countries do, but not everyone....

CR-HON, CR-MEX, MEX-US

Best 3 possible clasicos in concacaf IMHO, but since the US and MEX have performed better than the rest in the last 10 years most of the new soccer fans as most of us will consider the MEX-US game as the absolut concacaf classic, but everything was different in the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's when the US has nothing in soccer and teams like el salvador were pretty good.

Yea ES and Honduras had a huge rivalry, they even went to war over a game. But look at ES now, they get their asses handed to them by Bermuda lol.

Mex vs USA is not a rivalry, or a classic in that sense.

So I'll go with Honduras-Costa Rica.

T&T vs Canada (4-0) 2001 WC Qualifers.

T&T versus Jamaica is always a big rivalry between caribbean neighbours. We play on the same team for cricket, but we compete against each other in Football. Unfortunately we haven't had that many full XI vs XI games, the copa caribe matches are always B teams for both sides.

By far US-Mexico is the super-classico of concacaf. We had a war, various political and boarder skirmishes, and the modern day fight over immigration, etc.....Not to mention we were the 2 dominant players of the concacaf scene.

In 2001, Mexico vs the U.S. was not considered a rivalry.

You have to go back further than that. The rivalry started in the mid to late 90's when the US beat Mexico a few times. The early defeats (like the 4-0 US win in the '95 Nike US cup, the quarterfinals of the '95 Copa America and the 0-0 draw in the '98 qualifier in Azteca ) were considered humiliating to Mexico as the US nats were generally considered a joke at the time in Mexico.

Ever since that time Mexico looked for revenge, but aside from beating the US in the finals of the Gold cup, they have been frustrated in this attempt. Their desire for revenge has of course risen dramatically after the famous 2-0.

so it was the concacaf classico in the late 90's because the U.S. beat mexico a few times. i know you didn't say that but this wasn't a rivalry in the 90's,. please. this is a 5 or 6 year old rivalry. no way the concacaf classic. no way you can call a 6 year old rivalry the classic of a region. Los Classicos no nacen, se hacen con la historia ;). Costa rica vs Honduras is the bigger Classic

How so. I was living down there too at that time and every time after those results it was said on TV that this is going to be the chance for revenge. I'm sure that no one really mentions those games from the 90's anymore but they are still trying to re-establish the dominance of the region that was lost at that time.

Honduras vs. El Salvador...

No really, it's USA vs. Mexico now for sure. Other teams (Costa Rica, Jamaica, Honduras, TnT) come and go but these are the two teams that are set to battle it for regional domination for now and the future.

Not true, Jamaica and T&T have been battling for Caribbean domination since the start of the CFU. No other Caribbean nation is close to these two in football power.

In terms of Football quality, it will be USA vs Mexico. In terms of passion, to each his own. Trinis and Jamaicans will value their rivalry as much as the rest.

FWIW, I was in Mexico and saw a poll (some 40,000 participants in Mexico's 3 major cities) and asked who Mexico's rival was. IIRC, it choices were Costa Rica, United States, Honduras, Dont have one, not sure.

Costa Rica actually had a larger percentage. They had like 23%, where as the US had 15%.

Granted, i dont take these polls as concrete data because I question its methods, BUT when you see many of these polls and see how it varies... it makes you think that we dont have a definite rival.

According to some of the older Mexican players and reporters, Mexico had a bigger rivalry with Costa Rica because they posed a bigger threat. When Concacaf was only given ONE slot, Costa Rica use to give Mexico trouble.

Central America hates Mexico because they saw us taking their WC hopes away. Now that CONCACAF has had 3 slots, Mexico does not have to battle it out with one team per se.
