Defending champion Guatemala and surprise packet El Salvador have begun training for the Central Zone qualifying tournament for the 2003 FC Gold Cup, the UNCAF Copa de Naciones, with their eyes on a pair of friendlies against each other.
Technical director Julio Cesar Cortes has brought together 25 players for the defending Central American champions, who won the competition for the first time in 2001. But they were knocked out by arch-rival El Salvador in last year's Gold Cup finals, who have 27 players together in a training camp. The two sides will face each other on 15 and 19 January in California.

Columbian club side CD América took an early lead and cruised to a 3:1 victory over Panama’s full national side Sunday in a friendly at Estadio Pascual Guerrero in Cali.
The match was the first of two for the canaleros this week, the second scheduled for Wednesday against Club Deportivo Cali in Palmira as they wrap up their final preparations for Central Zone qualifying to the 2003 FC Gold Cup, the UNCAF Copa de Naciones, which they will host from 9-23 February

Panama concluded their two-game tour of Colombia Wednesday with a 4:2 loss at the hands of hosts Deportivo Cali at Estadio Rivero Escobar.
The tour, which also included a 3:1 loss at the hands of CD América earlier in the week, comes as Panama wrap up their preparations for Central Zone qualifying to the 2003 FC Gold Cup, the UNCAF Copa de Naciones, which they will host from 9-23 February.

Despite trailing 1:0 at halftime, Costa Rica scored three goals in the final half hour to defeat Chilean side CD Universidad Católica 3:2 in the ticos debut under recently-appointed technical director Steve Sampson.

The field for the seventh edition of the Confederation’s championship for national teams, FC Gold Cup 2003, comes into sharp focus beginning this weekend when the first of the two regional qualifying tournaments is held, the UNCAF Copa de Naciones.
Five teams will be chasing defending champion Guatemala - who won their first Central American championship in capturing the 2001 UNCAF Copa de Naciones on home soil - as the Union Centroamericana de Fútbol crowns a champion for the seventh time.

GUATEMALA CITY -- Los Angeles Galaxy star Carlos Ruiz -- the top goalscorer for Guatemala -- was unable to travel to Panama with his country's team because of a court order.

Ruiz's former wife Laura Mendez Urizar obtained a family court order after accusing Ruiz of failure to pay child support.

Surprising El Salvador rests atop the table after the third day of the Central Zone qualifying tournament for the 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cup, winning their second match of the tournament in defeating Nicaragua 3:0 on Wednesday.
El Salvador is on six points from their three matches after the victory, ahead of Costa Rica, which has four points after their 1:1 draw with Guatemala in the second match Wednesday at Estadio Rommel Fernandez in Panamá.

I don't think Steve Sampson is going to last through WC qualifying, or even up to qualifying.

Costa Rica has plenty of WC squad veterans at this tournament (Fonseca, Wallace, Marin, Bryce, Drummond, Castro, Cordero--others?) and should be playing better. Then again, Sampson's a very inexpensive option for now--they can hire their real WC coach after he's been canned.

On the other hand, El Salvador look better than I thought they would, and were unlucky not to come away with a draw in the CR match. Are most of their players in the domestic league? I was surprised Quintanilla didn't get the ES call from DC United after seeing Ruiz and Garcia play for Guatemala.

I look forward to the Honduras-El Salvador match on Saturday.
