I know that a "cap" is an appearance for a national team. Is it short for something? From where is the term derived? Just curious...and bored.:)

If you ever get to Charleston and visit the Battery's 3 Lions Pub, there's 2 of Sir Stanley Matthews caps framed on the wall.

I half-expected to get shotdown for asking such a question but thanks to you guys I've learned something very interesting. Now I can go around asking everyone if they really know where the word came from! Cheers to you...and thanks again.;)
