I think Coupet needs to stand on his head for 90 mins and save 40 penalties before Ray sees him as the number 1.

Against Costa Rica, Bathez made an awful flap on their second goal and looked poor and was not putting any confidence in the back-line.

On comes Coupet, and France don't concede and look more organised at the back. He then starts against Germany and 'quelle surprise' - France don't concede any goals

Ray is clueless.

I think he may need some more of the press to spell it out for him.

Confirmation : Domenech is insane.

At least he's not coherent. The fact that Barthez starts isn't that surprising if the coach wants to try him again before taking a decision ; Fabien is the one under scrutiny now. But then, since he wants to test players (like Sylvestre) : why no Pires or Ribery ? Or let's be crazy, why no Micoud ?

I think he fears of missing Fabien's experience during bid tournaments ; OK, I'm not his lawyer, but let's recognise Barthez wasn't part of the players who let down the squad during our last campaigns. Even in Euro2004, he had been irreprochable.

Now, the situation has changed, sure. So Ray wants to be certain Fab can't be the number one anymore before relegating him and his assets (read experience) on the bench.

Frankly, if Barthez completely screws the match, it would make the decision process a lot more easier. On the other hand, if he makes a brilliant display (and all the cases in between), you can imagine the headaches for the poor Estelle Denis' BF...;) :D

I still can't find anything on why Henry isn't starting, maybe it's just tactics, but does anyone know a reason yet?

I suppose it's not that big of a deal, just curious.

Then he'd "rest" Zidane and Thuram as well.

I mean, it makes sense he'd want to test out Trez w/ Anelka, I am actually very interested to see how that plays out.

I think a number of you are looking at the roster for this match the wrong way. This lineup is a chance to look at certain combinations based on certain match ups. I have all the faith in what Domenech is trying to do with the different combinations. I would like to see Micoud and as someone pointed out Mexes in the lineup. Don't knock the 'OL call ups. Think about it, if you've got an core used to playing with one another on your team, that's not a bad thing and it's quite common throughout the World -- Bresil, Germany, England (cringes at typing it), Italia??? I think Coupet will be the #1 and starting GK in the Coupe du Monde. Fabe is too much of a liability in goal. One minute he's awesome and the next it's like he's on Crack or something. Coupet has been very, very stable the past two years and has earned the right to start.

Mon Opinion --- Take this lineup as a grain of salt and enjoy it.

starting line-up: Barthez - Silvestre, Boumsong, Thuram, Sagnol - Dhorasoo, Vieira, Diarra, Zidane (cap) - Anelka, Trezeguet.

Barthez? and silvestre??? are starting :eek:barthez? it would be kind of weird to say, well, i haven't decided who's going to keep goal in germany", and then only play coupet! silvestre? raymundo doesn't want to be at loggerheads with a club that provides about a third of his squad!

I have not been following Dom's decisions lately...is he really not going to even consider Pires if his form for Arsenal improves? What's the deal. Pires has one last huge hurrah in him.

I believe Wenger has had a quiet word with the FFF and Raymundo.

Arsenal simply can't afford him to get injured.

Maybe he doesn't get TF1 in his house?

a lot of good points but we here in the France forum are always a bit skeptical when it comes to Madame Cleo....uh, I mean Raymond Domenech.

Between his refusal to call up some very talented players and his inabililty to inspire the players during the qualifiers, ther have been a lot of things to criticise about his methods. he did however convince Zizou and Co. to play so that was good but I think any couch in that situation would have done the same thing.

Anyway...I'm looking forward to the game!

I never thought a NT coach would make me miss Roger Lemerre.
