Momo Sissoko has been forced to stay behind in Portugal after being treated in hospital in Lisbon for a serious eye injury picked up during the first-half of a 1-nil defeat against Benfica.
Sissoko took a kick to the face during the first-half and was immediately substituted. After undergoing tests in hospital in Lisbon, the midfielder was told he wouldn't be flying home to Merseyside with the rest of the squad.

A spokesman for Liverpool Football Club said: "It is a serious eye injury which means Momo will be staying in hospital overnight for observation and further tests. The Club doctor and one of the physios is staying in Portugal with the player until he is able to return to England."

It goes without saying this could be really terrible news. Best of luck Momo.

Am I the only one that thinks this is potentially huge?

Suddenly our midfield is looking pretty thin. Gerrard or Hamman goes down and we are in huge trouble.

Agreed. Sissoko had actually been playing well lately. Best wishes for a speedy return.

I'm concerned that his eye trouble seems to have resulted from a bad knock in the head, not necessarily a direct hit to the eye. That makes me think it could be neurological. I couldn't see the game (it wasn't aired where I am . . . grrr. . ); did anyone get a better look at exactly what happened?

Looked like Beto's foot caught Momo on corner of the eye or slap-bang on his temple-- the programme director was truly dreadful at replays. But the prognosis is not good at all.

This sounds bad:

A club spokesman said: "Momo has undergone further tests this morning which have confirmed damage to the retina in his right eye.

"The injury is currently affecting his eyesight. Further consultations with eye specialists have been arranged for when the player returns to England."

Yeah that's really bad news. Could mean a lengthy layover.

Hopefully his sight can be saved... poor guy.

My thoughts and well-wishes are with him. He's such a young kid and promising player. Any injury to the eye can be scary, let's hope that he's ok.

I didn't see the kick, sounds like it should have been a red card offense with the damage it caused. Hope he's alright and gets well soon.

I haven't seen it either, but Beto apologized, so that's something.

To me, it was a very poor challenge but more clumsy than anything else. Beto looked quite contrite immediately after the incident.

Sounds like its a retinal detachment. I had one of these about five years back--but was lucky that it was in a region of the retina that wasn't used for sight. The big question with these injuries is where on the retina and how big. If its small enough they can fix it with laser surgery, but if its larger they'll have to operate.

The big complication with this sort of injury is that once the retina is detached it dies very quickly and basically you'll never get your vision back from the detached portion, the hope is just to scar the area around it and keep the detachment from spreading to other parts of the retina.

Hopefully the detachment is relatively small and in a peripheral region, if they have to operate he'll be in the hospital for a week and then out of action for six weeks where he won't even be able to read... (moves the eye back and forth too much). After that he's got to worry about future detachments. Edgar Davids had this sort of injury and came back and is fine, hopefully Momo's injury isn't in the macular (central) region of the retina and they can fix it with laser surgery.

He's probably out for several months though...

Is it possible that he could completely lose sight in that eye?

It's possible, but unlikely. He should heal quite well.

My mom suffered a severe detached retina and the surgery to correct it went wrong, but she can still see okay (not perfectly). Even with complications it is fairly correctable. He'll be unable to play for quite a while though, because you can't do anything that moves your eye for weeks after it's corrected. Being so young, I wouldn't think the damage would end up being permanent.

I hope Sissoko fully recovers from this injury and is back playing as soon as possible.

I just read the article, this is horrible news. I hope Sissoko the best and a full recovery.

It now seems a realistic possibility that Sissokos injury could be career ending, and if it isnt his vision will still not be perfect in his right eye. This is horrible news. After Scholes we all know what a dangerous area the eye is to have an injury:

Liverpool's Mohamed Sissoko faces an anxious wait to discover if his eye injury could threaten his career.

"The prognosis is guarded but vision will be compromised on the right side," said Joao Paco, the doctor who treated Sissoko at Lisbon's CUF hospital.

"We can't say now if it's going to be 20% or 80%, it's premature. You have to wait for the next 48 or 72 hours."

"His right eye is closed down and it's been difficult to assess the damage because of the swelling and bleeding.

"Obviously this is a very traumatic time for Momo and the club is in constant contact with his family and representatives. It's a very nasty injury."

Word now seems to be that he could totally lose vision. Supposedly it is bleeding and swolen as well. Nasty nasty Stuff.

Momo get better. Take as long as you need.

I would hate to see his career ended like this. No player deserves that.
