David Simon - Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets

It's by the guy who created The Wire, written back in 1991. Follows the Baltimore Homicide Department around for a year (1988 I thin) and writes about it. It's a helluva book so far, and the best part is that you can see the characters of The Wire in this, where Simon gets his influences. Hell, some of the names aren't even changed - Vernon Holley and Jay Landsmann are real people.

Great book so far.

Yes! I've been meaning to read this book. Well, I just ordered it on Amazon. Thanks for reminding me, sdot.

I read the shittiest book I have read in my adult life during a flight recently.

It is called "The Plantation" by Chris Kuzneski. Never pick it up from the airport bookstore.

Ideally, never pick up anything from the airport bookstore. Full retail price for a book when Amazon is around? No thanks.

I'm all about the magazines when I fly. I used to pick up a copy of SLAM every time I flew. I still have a stack from my senior year of high school, when I checked out a couple colleges. Kinda funny reading now, seeing guys that went bust on their front cover.

They treat FHM and Maxim like porn at some airports, kinda ridiculous.

Hehe, reminds me of when I used to travel for work and pick up a copy of The Economist, or Fast Company, or FourFourTwo and throw in a pack of gum so I could list the entire purchase as "food" on the expense report. :)

1. Corporate Finance 2.Managerial Accounting 3. Market Research...

Although before all these heavy school books I actually read a neat little religious book called "The Shack", which is apparently based on a true story.

A Sense of Where You Are

This is an account of Bill Bradley's basketball career at Princeton. It is an absolutely fantastic read. If you know nothing about basketball it is interesting and just as interesting if you are an expert. Bradley reminds me of an outspoken Scholes in some ways, but you should read this if you've got nothing else to do. Pretty cheap used copies available too.

I'm finishing the last few chapters of this tonight.

It's a really good read if you're at all interested in Bobby or the Kennedy clan in general. It's also interesting if you like reading about a different way of political campaigning from the TV ad and 24/7 news cycle culture of modern day America. Bobby could really stand in front of crowds and speak off the cuff and interact with people in a manner that would see him get slaughtered in today's environment of canned speeches. In turn, crowds of people mixed about their opinion of a candidate could actually go out and hear them speak before they decided their vote, as opposed to the photo-op, cheerleading events we get served.

I've got a few options lined up for my next read, but I think I'll go with this...
