Now reading the 'Black Death' by Phillip Ziegler.

A very fascinating book especially if you are interested in this aspect in history like me.

Thought I would describe the three types of bubonic plague

The first was the disease with the buboes that developed in the groin, neck and armpit which could grow to the size of an orange. There was dusky stains or blotches caused by haemorrhages under the skin. The victim died after about four or five days. The patient could survive if the bubo suppurates within a week.

The next was primary pneumonic or pulmonary plague in which recovery was virtually unknown and the victim took about 1.8 days to die. It was the most infectous because it attacked the lungs so there is a lot of coughing of blood and plague bacilli are sprayed into the air everytime the patient exhales.

The third was septicaemic plague which caused the victim to die in hours. The victims bloodstream would be full, in one or two hours, would be swarming in plague bacilli. The victim is dead long before the buboes are formed.

I once saw a documentary about a certain gene that a small percentage of people had that allowed them to be immune to the plague. Passed down through the years, this same gene was able to avoid the HIV/AIDS virus.

Does anybody know the name of what I'm talking about? The gene or chromosome?

I never thought i would post in this thread, but here goes:
So in Heathrow before my 11 hour flight back to San Fran I bought the new Rooney autobiography. 360 pages!
I finished the entire thing on the flight:eek:
I found it very interesting and I just couldnt put it down. Rooney really explains his whole life from childhood (Everton scouse) to winning the EPL for the first time. He has all the true incite ont he scandals he has been involved in, wc06 red card, his best mates, Colleen, and everthing..

He said some interesting things such as that Silveste is one of the fastest players at OT, That at everton if you took a shit with the toilet door closed! then the lads would throw a bucket of cold water you

pretty embarassing but i recently finished harry potter. Im reading a great book called German Football: history, culture, society. By Alan Tomlinson and Christopher Young. It's written very well and it spans the years from pre ww2 through winning the bid for the world cup in 2006. Bundesliga, National side, and how it all effects national identity. Great read for anyone interested in German Football, this one goes out to sirmanc.

I was never going to finish Ulysses before school starts so I've switched to something shorter. All Quiet on the Western Front. Have really enjoyed it thus far.

Just finished this...

Actually a very interesting look on soccer from a global perspective. Each chapter focuses on a different one, such as it's impact on Islamic countries, old working-class hooligans, and dictators. It's a pretty quick read and I really enjoyed it.

With you on that 100 percent. Now that I'm working, I'm finally gonna throw down the subscription price. I used to only read it about 6,7 times a year, in airports mainly, and that shit is expensive. I picked up the last issue and it was 6.26 at a newsstand. You get your money's worth, but it's still a steep price.

I remember hearing about that. I thought it was some ethnic group in Eastern Europe. I can't remember anything else though.

very true. I started reading it this summer in England it was £3.60 . When I got to Germany I told my dad that i had been reading it and he used to read it too, so i convinced him into a subscription. For a magazine of that quality, not to mention how frequent it comes it is worth it. Expensive, you're right, but worth it.

Yah, I think it's 52 bucks for half a year. Not bad for a weekly of that quality, 2 bucks , and only 1/3rd of the cover price.

And you easily get triple or quadruple the content of a 1 buck Newsweek/Time, so it works out. I don't read that much now, just on the train to work, back, etc, but it'll last a good 4, 5 days.
