Let's discuss the defense here.

Doing pretty good so far. Can honestly say that the Guaremalians have had any good chances, or any possession, really.

Huh? Yeah, they've yet to touch the ball.

Yeah no shots on goal for either team. The coaches will be impressed with their respective defenses with that stat.

On bigsoccer there are not wasted threads. Only wasted people

With the play of Pope and, especially, Conrad, I'm less worried about Gibbs' health. Conrad's tackling was excellent, and his clearances were often directed toward a teammate, not wild smack-it-up types.

Also looks definitively like Pearce isn't ready for Germany. Interesting to see whether Dunivant makes it. Despite his lack of experience internationally, I'm pulling for him big time at this point. He's physical enough, a good attacking option for the position, good enough positional sense. Only remaining question is his athleticism.

Good play from Pope, Conrad, and Hedjuk. Pierce not so good - out of position on a couple of plays. Bosell is too slow for the international game, but we knew that and it was a nice "thank you" cap.

Hedjuk really had an intelligent game and initiated several attacks in the first half.

Agree. I like Pearce's quickness but he is still a little out of his depth. Dunivant did far better in his chances.

Conrad is definitely making Gibbs and Berhalter sweat. CD is most assuredly our deepest position - we have 6 guys who could conceivably start in a WC and likely do fine. And the wings are looking good as well - Dolo and Hejduk on the right, Lewis and Dunivant on the left, Boca in a pinch.

Put simply, defense will probably be the least of our worries in Germany.

On 2nd viewing...has Pope picked up a half stride of pace? Or were the Guats just slow?

Conrad was very solid.
