Watching the highlights of the Roma versus Empoli game - Totti was carried off in the 12th minute with an ankle injury, which looked just as ugly as Alan Smith's injury. No report on the injury but IF he is out it will certainly put a dent in Italy's World Cup hopes.

This would definately hurt. I think this Italian team has a lot of depth and flair up top.

Totti is pretty much irreplacable. Think Rooney going down for England right before the world cup. There are players who can play roughly the same positions (Del Piero) but the quality isn't something you can replicate.

It would hurt, but i think more to Totti (well, duh) than Italy. There is enough depth for them to over come.

Broken ankle. The initial time out is estimated at two months.

Broken ankles may heal the bone in two months but being able to run out it and pivot, turn, etc should be a while longer

Indeed. Just ask Ben Olsen.

does this mean Rossi gets a shot? I say this sort of tongue in cheek but I guess it begs the question of who's backing up Totti? Good news for USA potentially but looks like they have adequate depth to make up for a potential loss or lack of effectiveness of Totti.

This really sucks. I wanted to see Totti play against the USA.

That looks very unlikely now

Why even bring up Rossi on here? No he won't get a shot with either nation until after the WC. End of that.

It begs the question thats why. If you can answer my question as to who they would take to fill Totti's spot, then I wouldn't even have responded. So there!

I'm guessing you don't follow the Italian national team, right?

Rossi won't play for them in this World Cup.

thanks for that. You're right, I don't follow them. Maybe someone can provide a list of guys that are backups to Totti on the squad then, that would be useful info.

because he does not actually play for Man U.He sits on the bench for ManU. Why would they bring a young guy who barely/never plays for the first team into the Italian national team??

Very Unfoturnate - Didnt look like an extraordinarily rough challenge, but Totti did go down awkwardly

Totti is an extremely gifted player- top 10 in the World IMO

Would rather see the US beat Italy's best - makes for a better story.

I wonder how many girls/women are sobbing in Japan or in the world for that matter over Totti's injury?

Del Piero, Vieri, Camoranesi, Zaccardo, Toni, Grosso and a whole slew of others. None of them are backups.

Italy won't have Totti. We won't have JOB. Depth is important in the WC.

It's doubtful they'll be facing our best. It's part of the game. Sucks for Totti, because this was probably his last WC.

Broken ankles may heal the bone in two months but being able to run out it and pivot, turn, etc should be a while longer

I broke my ankle about a month ago and just got the cast off on Friday. The bone is almost entirely healed and I'm able to walk on it, but I'm expecting it to be at least 2-3 weeks before I can do even some light jogging, longer than that to be able to do everything I could before the injury.

HOWEVER, mine healed quicker than would be normal because of the nature of the break. It was a totally clean break and both parts of the bone stayed in place, almost as if someone just sliced thru the bone with a knife. I was actually able to put some weight on it within 3-4 days of the injury. Most broken ankles will take longer to heal than mine did. That said, unless it's an exceptionally bad break, I don't see why this should affect Totti's availability for the WC.
