Today's game vs. Manchester United was on at 4:30 AM Pacific time. Next weekend's game vs. Manchester City is scheduled at 4:15 AM Pacific time. Are they always on so early?

They are popular in England and get good ratings numbers. These games are televised early so they can be seen throughout the country and fans can still get to 3PM kick offs elsewhere.

Televised on what channels - PPV? I couldn't find them on my satellite at the regular start time - only a PPV tape delayed by several hours. Count your blessings...;^)

Well, that's half right. Another reason why a game of this magnitude is on at 12.30 is because the police don't want the fans to have too much time to get pissed up beforehand.

What happens is that the TV companies with rights to the competition (in this case the Beeb and Sky) look at the fixtures for each round and pick the games they want to show live. These, by definition, are therefore moved from the normal (albeit increasingly unusual) 3pm Saturday slot.

The rozzers, quite rightly in this case, don't allow a game of this type to be moved to the other slots available to the TV companies - either 5.35 on Saturday afternoon, or 6.30 PM on Sunday evening.

And that's a good thing, given the really, really evil atmosphere at this game. I've not seen it like that in years, it was vicious. There were scuffles all round the ground throughout and the "banter" between opposing sets of fans went a lot further than it has done in recent years. I've not heard the Rags sing Hillsbrough songs for quite some time, for instance.

Yes, there is that about limitimg the alcohol intake before the match. It's the reason the Old Firm is always at noon in Glasgow. Interesting about the atmosphere. But in general, the early kick off is for television purposes as is the 4PM Sunday kickoffs.

Of course they're not always on that early. But they are eight hours ahead of west coast time, so even the latest kick off times over there will be pretty early here on the west coast.

Better they're on early then not at all.

I take the live games when I can get them, because it wasn't long ago that we couldn't see any football games, live or delayed.
