OK, we're going to get some "Good" beer for the bus trip and as we're getting bottles we can get an assortment. Now we can get what I deem as good (and you can all just damn deal! ;) ) or you can make some suggestions for us to pick from (list here). As we have a spreadsheet of who is going we obviously won't consider your request if you not on the trip (duh!)

We do have budget (and it has to get water and some soda) so if your tastes are for the stuff that is super high end well, bring some along for us to taste!

My favorite is Pete's Wicked Ale

For "good beer", I would vote for Newcastle - it has a lucky SE tailgate history, with a nod to Guinness :)

I also think there should be one cooler full of cheap crap - since honestly more people drink that nasty stuff - so a cooler of Miller Lite and Bud - and one of real beers. No need to waste ice on the cheap beer :D

Several possibilities for good domestic brews include:

Brooklyn Lager - Although technically not anywhere near the slime pit that is Northern New Jersey, Brooklyn is within the designation of "tri-state area" and so drinking this would be "drinking their beer".

Samuel Adams Boston Lager - A solid American lager beer that is both inexpensive and easy to find.

Victory Brewing Company Prima Pils - The name says it all - this is about 3 points at your home away from home. However, this is a true pilsner and may not be appropriate for people without the tast for that style.

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale - Another solid American beer.

With all the quality US brews, isn't something like Newcastle just another non-descript import that has a claim to fame of being better than Budweiser?

(Yes, I am a beer snob with a preference for American Microbrews! Deal with it!) :)

Hallelujah. We don't need to import our crap just to say that it's imported. I would be happy if all the beer I could drink would be any of the thousands of incredible American microbrews out there.

And Guinness. I couldn't give up Guinness. :D

Now, this opens up interesting roadtrip possibilities!

We could start a tradition of sorts, drinking our opponent's best brews on our way to crush them at their home ground.

Sam Adams is an obvious one for New England roadtrips... however, I worry that we would have to count on REAL "beer snob" expertise to come up with one for Salt Lake treks ;)

Sam Adams I've never much liked, too bitter. But I have drank (drunk?) much of it in airports. I'd put Dominion in that category too. Hell, most "micro"-brews. But beer snobs seem to love bitter beer.
I'm not a giant Pale Ale fan, but Lisa likes it, so I could deal. She'd also get twice as drunk from it than her regular Miller Lite - so you guys might have to deal as well :-) Sh also likes Boddington's so feel free to get some of that as well (totally not suggesting that at all, just being funny - but Kim likes it too, if I recall)

I don't care if Newcastle is imported, it tastes yummy. If there were a version that was as yummy made in America, I'd be all for it - especially if it were brewed in a union shop :)

I have no idea what the difference is between pilsner, lager, or ales - some of each taste good, more of each taste bad - I like the good ones :)

I like the word Victory in the beer name - we used to try to stick to "themes" with the beer in the old Lot 4 tailgates, so I like that idea.

I will not stand for any beer manufactured by the evil ********************s at Coors Brewing Company to be on the bus, I will draw that line.

I've always liked the idea of drinking the enemy's beer, so this would be cool.

(And FWIW, Brooklyn Pilsner is pretty much the equal of Victory Prima Pils WRT American Pilsners.)

15 second lesson

2 types of beer
Lager- fermented at lower temperatures with yeast which sinks to the bottom of the fermntation vessel. it is also cold conditioned which is called Lagering.
Ale- which ferments at a higher temperature and which yeast float.

So you really only have to types of beer but millions of styles of beer.
Pilsner is a style of Lager originally brewed in Plz Checkoslavakia.
most of your American mass produced brews are lagers. Bud, Miller, Coors, etc.

this concludes your 15 second lesson.

Try the Brooklyn Brown Ale or Smutty Nose Old Brown Dog (I think that is the name) to get a superior beer to Newcastle Brown and made here in the US.

Victory makes some tasty beer and well a victory is what we all expect at our home away from home. That and the smell of urinal cakes gone bad...

Coors Brewing company makes a Beer-like product, which often gets confused with beer. However, think Yoohoo versus chocolate milk for comparison.

The thing about Pilsner is that it tends to be on the hops side of the lagers (usually described as bitter or dry) and not everyone enjoys the hoppy side of beer. Most "generic" lager style beers are milder and easier drinking for the uninitiated or those more familiar with mass-produced American beer-like products.

And FWIW, Brooklyn Pilsner is pretty much the equal of Victory Prima Pils WRT American Pilsners

Yes, however, I suggested the lager for the reasons described above. I definitely have a fondness for the Brooklyn Pilsner and would poke Ray Hudson in the eye to get one... ;)

Thanx for some suggestions, Rev. They didn't have those two at Harris Teeter, but I did enjoy the beer I drank on the way home - Abita Turbo Dog ;)

Boddington's is heavenly, creamy goodness in a can! We can look for some city-we're-visiting beer. Keep the suggestions coming

Just bumping this as we'll need to finalize selections this week. We can also take some dvd and song suggestions (we can burn a cd). Sometimes listening to music and talking is more fun than a movie.

How about some Mobius energy beer?

Was that the stuff in Charleston? I thought that got mixed reviews from folks who tried it.

Yep, I doubt you would find it up there. The first few taste kinda strange, but after that you are so wired that you don't even notice, nor do you notice the fact that you start drinking at an increased pace, which means you get really ********ed up.

I heartily agree. How about in tribute to Shep Messing instead:
