Being from Philadelphia, I once read a book called "Receiving Erin's Children", which compared Philadelphia and Liverpool in regards to Irish immagration to the two cities after the potato crop failed. This made me feel a certain connection to the city which is very similar in many ways to my own. I started to support Liverpool after reading this book and got totally hooked after hearing YNWA sung so loudly. Hearing YNWA reminds me of Celtic matches, where it never fails to give the Bhoys a lift. As a side note, I was upset when I found out that the world's greatest band of all time, The Beatles, actually support Everton.
None of them were (are) really football fans. Paul has said you'd have to call him blue because his mother's brothers were Evertonians. John and Ringo had no affiliation with either. And I've quoted George often, "there are three teams in Liverpool and I support the other one"
You can always trust Paul to get it a bit wrong --- can you see John accepting a designation as "Sir"???

You can always trust Paul to get it a bit wrong --- can you see John accepting a designation as "Sir"???For old farts like me, music stopped when the Beatles did.
Good friend of mine Joey Fagen (Feegan) aka "Joey and the Strangers" went to Hamburg with "Rory Storm and the Hurricanes" the "Undertakers", and this group called the "Beatles"
Joey always said Paul was a bit of a sticky beak, George and John would get pissed up and Joey would stand in for one or the other...and them for him. But Paul used to hang with Brian Epstein (No, not that way)
Did you ever hear about them getting arrested by the German police for lining up on the roof of the Star club and pissing off it. A golden waterfall!!!
(Sir) Paul and Brian had to get them out. That story isn't in their athology either...
Ask Keith Richards how he feels about people who get called "Sir."

Being from America, I also had no real exposure to the game that was being played overseas. I did however, develop a love for the game through playing in local soccer leagues for most of my childhood.
As I grew into my adolescence I also developed a love for playing guitar and playing music in band's. I remember one day one of my bandmates was trying to persuade our band to do a cover Pink Floyd's song "fearless" off the "meddle" album. He was playing the song to me and the rest of my band and just as it was ending, I heard for the first time this powerful group of voices singing in unison an amazingly powerful song. I had never heard anything so powerful and emotional come from so many voices and was drawn to it immediately. No one in the band that day knew what it was or anything about it other than it being something cool that Pinkfloyd put on their album. It was not until a few years later when listening to the album with another friend of mine, that I found out it was a song that fans of Liverpool FC sung at games.
A few years later after getting broadband cable I came across a Liverpool game being played on FSC and immediately started watching it. As the game was coming to a close, from out of the noise of the crowd those same voices from the Pink Floyd album rose up and lifted this amazingly talented team onto victory. At that moment and from then on I knew this was my team! YNWA:D

Well, Ill be honest. I didnt really start getting into soccer until World Cup 2002 and a little before then. But I knew I wanted a club to follow and there just simply is no passion in the MLS for the teams (I know its a vicious cycle, its people like me that dont have a fav MLS and therefore there is no passion but whatever) and I just liked Liverpool. Not to mention Robbie Fowler is a badass player (unfortuneatly he's past his prime ;( ). I really wanted to see Fowler at Liverpool for awhile longer. Doesnt hurt my last name is Fowler too, made it easier to customize my Liverpool jersey with my last name on it / it is a player too.

My ancestors are from Liverpool. So, in a distant way, it's in my blood. :D

Because my favourite player is Harry Kewell.
Because my favorite player was Peter Beardsley, and when he went back to Newcastle, I stayed a red. Also growing up in a leafy suburb with no pro team for miles, I felt I could take my pick.:D
My Dads family are from Stockport and I remember going to Wembley two or three in the early 90's when they made the play-offs or Auto-glass finals, but not for me.
Your teams like your family in that they choose you as much as vice verse.
I've only visited Anfield 3 times and never on match day.
But I'd like to think that night in Istanbul meant as much to me down south as did to reds the world over.
Glad to have signed up just before #6;)

Just like some of my fellow patriots, I played soccer as a youth but had little exposure to European soccer. The world cups are what opened my eyes to the beautiful game, and it was the 98' world cup with Michael Owen that left a lasting impression on me. I didn't progress any further from that point until the 02' world cup came along and I recognized Owen again, and I made sure that I would follow him for sure after the world cup. Thus my introduction to Liverpool FC and to the entertaining Champions League.
I didn't have much interest with the club at first, but as I watched more of their games and with the eventual departure of Owen I came to appreciate the club more and more. With the great atmosphere over at Anfield, the passionate fans, and the performances the team puts on, I knew that I wanted to be a loyal supporter of this club. In return I have been fortunate enough to see some of the best games ever played in soccer, hands down. With the influence of the new owners I can look forward to good times for this great club. Cheers!

I grew up in West Yorkshire, England in a city about 10 miles away from Leeds. Without a football team of our own most kids supported the closest team, which unfortunatly was Leeds Utd.
Although my dad is a Manure fan, his many attempts to get me interested in his team failed (apparantly I never showed an interest in football), but he did instill in me a pure hatred of those shite Leeds scum. When I was 6 or 7 years old 2 of my friends started "supporting" liverpool (Liverpool at the time being dominant in England), so being only young I did too.
My first memory of a Liverpool match is actually one we lost. 2-0 against Arsenal. Michael Thomas scoring the final goal with the last kick of the season, seeing us lose the league because although our goal difference was the same, Arsenal had scored more goals.
Then the 90s came. Liverpool became an average side, and my friends buckled under the pressure of the many Leeds fans to switch allegiance. I didn't. Although I lost contact with those friends a long time ago I still take great pleasure in the plight of Leeds and their freefall down the leagues :D
I'm so lucky my dad failed to convert me to his Manure ways. Even at the age of 5, I was destined to become a Liverpool fan. :)

I also living in the USA (Miami) did not grow up a "soccer fan." But, I am a huge sports fan (Dolphins, Canes, Heat, etc.) I do love competition and in the mid to late 90's started watching the CL. I became hooked on the sport during France 98. I still did not have a team to root for until watching Steven Gerrard play. I have been hooked on Liverpool ever sense. I visited England during the WC 02. This was the first time watching matches with people so passionate about footie. I came back to the States totally attached to the sport and Liverpool. So again Liverpool chose me!:D

A lot of the regulars know this from previous threads of this nature, but I'll post it again.
When I was young I lived in Kansas City. They had an indoor soccer team. I saw them play once at Kemper arena, and really enjoyed it. At 11 I moved to a small town in north Texas--no soccer there except during phys ed. So I kind of forgot about the beautiful game until 1994--followed the World cup a bit, and then lost footy again due to lack of coverage.
Fast forward to December 1997. I got the chance to move to England. We lived in Yorkshire, and I worked on a farm. The farm owners were Middlesbrough supporters, and some of the employees supported Leeds United. I asked about Leeds and was told by my friend Diane that they and there supporters had a somewhat tarnished reputation when it came to thuggery and racism. That put me off them. England were playing some warm up matches for France 1998 and I saw this kid come on against Morocco--short, lightening quick, and a lethal finisher. He played for Liverpool--and so did Ince, Macca, and Fowler---I was starting to like them before i ever saw the Reds play. Then I found out the liverpool had an American goalkeeper, and that was pretty much it. My ex went out and bought me a Liverpool kit, and then bemoaned the fact that I became an absolute fanatic over footy. The folks at the farm didn't understand how I could choose to follow Liverpool--but I didn't have the luxury of being born in a football made nation with 92 professional teams to choose from-- one of which would have been a local team. I also only knew of one other american in the Premiership at the time, Kasey Keller, but Leicester City were a lot farther away, and I didn't recognize any of there players at all.
These days I barely even follow other sports--and I used to follow baseball and American football with a kind of religious fantacism. No matter where we moved though, I continued to follow Liverpool---getting up at 2 a.m. to listen to Steve Hunter's audio commentary in Hawaii, annoying my ex by insisting on digital cable to get Fox Soccer and so on. A couple of years ago, I got the crest tattooed on to my left leg. It gets a lot of looks and questions because it is just so red...:)
This season has been tough becuase I went for long stretches without either regular internet (ie match time) or digital cable access and have had to content myself with reading match reports after the fact. I did get to see a match while visiting Guatemala--we outplayed CSKA London but lost... I did see many of the champion's league matches though, and listened to a couple of league matches as well. My support never waned despite lacking resources--and hopefully once August rolls around, I'll figure out how to watch the matches on my p/c, or at worst listen to them all and download highlights later.

I will be in the same boat as you next year, in regards to not having the resources. My apartment does come with cable, but I have to decide if I can afford to stump up the funds to pay for cable internet and digital cable.

I started playing football as a youngster, about 5yo. But didn't start following until I was about ten. My mother's second marriage was to a Pom who grew up around Bolton.
The first I started watching was the Italia '90 World Cup. He'd wake me up at about 3am our time to watch England play the likes of Ireland, Egypt, Belgium, Cameroon and ofcourse the Germans.
The players that got my attention most were the likes of Waddle, Lineker, Gascoigne, Platt, Barnes and Beardsley. Thankfully I didn't end up supporting Tottenham!
Waddle and Barnes were the two that stood out the most for me, Waddle with his dazzling runs down the wing and ofcourse that heartbreaking penalty miss over the bar against the Germans........
I never really went on to follow the English league after that but that's what got me into watching football and primarily following the English.
I remember supporting the English from then on in World Cups, largely also due to the fact that the Aussie's never made it.
I cannot clearly remember why I took a liking to LFC, maybe it was Barnes? My father also was a football fan and has always liked Liverpool so maybe he had some influence. I always thought of them as the team I liked but never really followed league football.
The first real memory I have of supporting the reds was after watching Micky Owen at France 98 and then the 2001 FA Cup against the Arse. Thats when I became a true follower! I haven't looked back since!
I'll never walk alone!:D

Oh and it's OK to call it football, I really don't know what shape a futbol is.

As a lot of guys around my age in Australia, I grew up with the early to mid 80's Tooheys ads with Craig Johnston, the little Aussie battler, plying his trade in the best football league in the world, for the red of Liverpool.
I live in Liverpool, Sydney, it made sense, and the rest they say is history! :)
20 odd years, numerous late nights/early mornings on tv and one visit to Anfield later, my new daughter wont even have an option- She'll only learn of one team!

I was watching a highlights program of the English Premier League about 15 years ago, when a Liverpool game came on. I didn't know much about any of the teams, so I had no idea who was good or not. They showed the Liverpool team sheet and there was two players, Gary Ablett and John Barnes, who were the same names as two players who used to play for my Australian Rules Football team, Geelong. I figured this was an omen and have been supporting Liverpool ever since.
not a Liverpool fan but I come bearing gifts.
