View Full Version : What players played the biggest role in qualifying?

Looking back on qualification, there were several players who played big roles but likely will not make the team. I was wondering what people thought in terms of who played the biggest part in qualifying overall and for those that won't make the team. In watching some games from '02 qualification, I was thinking of guys like Razov who helped but didn't make the final roster.
Overall - 1) Keller 2) Donovan 3) Beasley 4) Lewis 5) McBride
Did but won't - 1) Ralston 2) Ching 3) Cobi 4) Albright
In looking at the overall group, I recognize it was very offensive but I feel that each played such a huge role and either scored a big goal or just carried us all the way through. I think that most will recognize that Kasey was our WCQ MVP.
I hope that Ralston makes the team and believe that he has a good shot but most BSers have him on the outside looking in at the moment. Ching and Cobi scored big goals on the road in the semis to get us draws and made everything much easier.
Who have I missed on each of these lists?

We had this striker named Johntson or Johnson or something like that who scored a few goals.

i think most BSers WANT ralston on the outside looking in, but i would feel that most think Bruce will pick him anyway.
and yeah, that Johnson guy did OK. Gooch played well.

Ralston was huge in WCQ. If you look at the stats from WCQ, USA 13 Opponents 2 when Ralston was on the field. +11 goal differential, tied for best with a couple other people.

That's a nice stat, but kind of funny. I mean, who were the other people? Beasley and Donovan? I'm gonna look it up, just for fun.

but how much of that was the other people and how much of that was ralston? it's tough to separate that.

Yet another reason to cringe whenever Ching comes into the game.
How is he still getting more minutes than Rolfe?

It's interesting, but does it mean anything?
The best players are generally near the top of the list, so it might. Hockey stat, isn't it?

Yeah, it's a hockey stat. Fun to look at and fun to do, but I don't think it says much. Some surprises, though.

Curious what the +/- stat would look like if divided per 90 minutes played and compared to team USA's +/- per 90 minutes.

but who played the bigger role but isn't going to make the squad, ralston or ching?
I think having a true right sided midfielder like Ralston or Klein would greatly benefit this team and take away some of the crushing of our guys in the middle particularly Reyna and Donovan. I know that we likely wouldn't have a winger out there each game but for a spot start or perhaps to spread the ball out and possess.
