It's a Guatemalan "last hurrah" for a handful of players so expect an even larger than usual blue & white crowd. Instead of completely going young to start the rebuilding process, Guate is honoring the old guys. On the pitch Saturday will be an appearance from past Galaxy stud Martin Machon and joining him will be a host of players that were in their prime ten years ago.

In all probability making their last stand will be JC Plata (scored the big header when they tied Brazil in 1999) Mario Acevedo ("the coyote", who isn't so fast anymore) and Julio Giron (directed the midfield back in 2000 when guate lost 0-1 & tied with USA). These three guys have an average age of 36+ years. It would be nice for them if the Rolling Stones could play half-time.

Notably absentees will be:
Fredy Garcia - currently injured. former MLS playmaker scoring Crew's US Open Cup title winning loan goal.
Gustavo Cabrera - training with Real Salt Lake. guy from the diving header on GolTV commercial!
Willie Sims - their hope for the future. training with New England Revs. Son of 1970s Guate soccer superman Oscar Sims.
Dwight Pezzarosi - "the tank", Their big guy who headed down the Ruiz goal when they tied us in Mazatenango 2000. currently in season with Spain side Racing de Ferrol.
Jorge Rodas - former Earthquake and 2002 nat player who is also old but not selected
Fredy Thompson - my sources say the best midfielder in Guatemala. probably on the way to Liga Mexicana if not on any MLS radar. his absence will allow youngster Marvin Avila to make his debut - a new guy who is fun to watch even without his "kid'n play" cool choice of hair.

One final note - club team Municipal has become the retirement home of these old Guate national team players. It's also where former Galaxy's Pando Ramirez finally broke into the starting line-up this week after the recent Fredy Garcia injury. Pando might feel he has something to prove on Sunday which could up the entertainment level. It probably won't link but if anyone knows how find this file you can see Pando's game winning MLS Cup matrix-esque volley in spanish for a pre-game true latino experience at:

Great it looks like C team against C team this should be a great game. Seriously though if the fringe players Q, Ching, etc can't produce this weekend I think that'll end their hopes of going to Germany. I mean were gonna be playing against 36 year olds here.
