This came up in another thread, and I thought it would be an interesting topic in its own right...

The William Hill UK-based betting service puts the odds at 1 to 7.5 that the US will win the group stage at this summer's World Cup.

MAJOR EDIT--HOLD YOUR WALLET! I got the odds wrong initially. I had thought they were odds to advance to the knockout rounds, but they are odds to win the group. Can you tell I don't bet much?

I think those odds are for winning the group, not for advancing

Those are the odds of winning the group, not advancing. They must be. Otherwise, for example, you could place $10,000 each on France, Switzerland, Korea, and Togo in Group G and be assured of a payout greater than $40,000 no matter what the group's results. I don't see William Hill as being quite that stupid.

The thread tiltle should be US 7.5 to 1 Odds to Win Group. We are not an overwhelming favorite to win the group as your title states.
