I never have as much trouble getting to sleep as straight after a show, hot or cold tbh.

Erm, you're worried about the addictiveness of an antihistamine (which is what makes you tired in Nyquil), so you recommend alcohol instead? :D In fairness, it is difficult to sleep without Nyquil the first or second night without it if you've taken it for awhile, but it's not actually physically addictive, like, say, alcohol is. (Or other sleep aids or painkillers that people might be tempted to take).

Hot shower before bed usually works as well. I just shower in the AM though before work, so I don't usually do that.

I've never gotten addicted to Nyquil, but you do have trouble getting back to regular sleep after being on it for awhile.

You have to try to mix it up, not use the same remedy every time, be it Nyquil or alcohol. Ideally, you find something that works for you (like walking outside for half hour before bed and/or taking cool/hot showers) that is also generally healthy and can be done every day without any negative side effects.

Also, sex before sleep is very helpful (at least, for men). And healthier than any of the antibiotics or alcohol.

What I used to do in order to sleep, (especially when I woke up late in the day and had to go to sleep early) was work out or go play some sports to tire myself out. That works almost always. Then again, if you're really stressed out and have a lot of problems, your body can be as tired as possible, but those worries are going to keep you up.

Nyquil never puts me to sleep, and caffeine never keeps me awake. I'm weird... well, even more so than you guys would assume.

Never had insomnia per se, but it did usually take me a while to get to sleep. I try to combine reading before bed (usually something funny, not something requiring a lot of thought) with clearing my mind as much as possible.

Best I pulled off in college was 43 hours without sleep, end of the second semester of junior year. Had two exams in 24 hours plus a paper due.

Personal college record was 67 hours, due to 3 finals in one day and 2 papers by 2 days after the tests. I wanted to apply to get the tests pushed apart, but to no avail. So I managed to pull it off, but by the end I wanted to vomit, had weird muscle pains, just felt horrid all around.

I never understood the idea behind leaving everything til the end in college. To cram for a shitload of exams and writing multiple papers. Why would you want to put yourself under that stress. I would always schedule everything accordingly. Write one paper three weeks in advance. Study throughout the week, then during the weekend, writing the second paper, etc.

The only thing that put me to sleep was vicodin.

Also, sex before sleep is very helpful (at least, for men). And healthier than any of the antibiotics or alcohol.Unfortunately, sex before bed is like a shot of espresso for women.

I try to combine reading before bed (usually something funny, not something requiring a lot of thought) with clearing my mind as much as possible.Reading puts me right to bed. I've been reading Faulkner's Absalom, Absalom at bedtime for like a month now; I'm only on page 65. It's a dozer. :)

SirManc's idea of working out is a great one, but it doesn't work if you're already exhausted. I worked out when I was over-tired once, and I strained my achilles tendon, which was not fun. When I'm working out regularly though, I usually sleep like a baby.

Well I slept. :) Didn't do anything special.

Stil feel tired though and a little disappointed at how I completely wasted a bank holiday.

Haven't worked out at all for, erm, a while :D but if I remember right, it actually used to keep me awake as it was like the blood was flowing round my body more or my adrenalin flowing or something and it used to keep me awake.

Also, turn of the TV, computer, stereo while you're trying to sleep. If there's nothing to do but lie there, you're more likely to drift off.

Maybe that's the way to go as I always but always sleep with the tv on.

It has to be program that I like as even if I'm lying there with my eyes closed and the show bugs me in any way then I can't sleep. It has to be at least an hour long too, preferably longer as I always end up fretting about the possibility of not liking the next show. Something that's kind of slow paced and quietish is also nice. Ideal sports on tv for going asleep to are golf, cricket or snooker and if they're not on then I'll usually go for one of the serious documentary or wildlife channels.

I've found recently that audio podcasts knock me out very quickly. I'll use either BBC's Newspod or PTI from ESPN, just turn it on and lie down. The voices, and just voices, no music, help put me to sleep.

Of course, I actually have to listen to them for real later, but still..

Woke up on Friday afternoon, no sleep since. Think that's about 62 hours.

My eyes are stinging like mad as they're telling me they need a break and for some reason I'm smoking alot more too (every half hour or so). Just can't nod off. :(

Damn ROM... I feel your sting too.. 62 hours is something... I cant go more than 26 hours without sleep.. I might just faint..

ever try sleeping pills? I've tried them, I took 4 times my dose once to try and sleep through a long flight and they didn't work for me. Something about them just never works. For me at least.

never really had any problem sleeping..gone as soon as I put my head on the pillow.

if you cannot sleep you may be too hot, have eaten or have had cafetine too close before going to bed.

open the window but make sure you are still warm enough, dont eat too much before bed because it causes pain as I learnt to my cost and have no worries (if that is possible) and relax.

sometimes putting an extra cover seems to make more able to sleep..security perhaps?

never tried nor wish to do so sleeping pills..

If the traditional sleep inducer doesn't work then you could always watch the first few minutes of a Chelsea match.

I've had some fun sleepness nights in college back in '02 in June, right when the World Cup in Japan/Korea started. The games started between 1 am and 6 am CT IIRC, I wanted to see them all live, I also had my finals/papers due around the same time and I worked something like 30 hours/week.
So, for about 2 weeks I slept on average 4 hours.
Not bad, except that I broke up with my girlfriend during that time.

I do sleep better with a duvet, I guess it is the extra security. That normally does do the trick.
