What is the rule about the numbering on the front of the shirts?
Adidas and Puma have them on the right chest.
Nike has them in the center.
Do all jerseys have to have the same placement of front numbers.
ANY ONE HAVE AN IDEA?

Do there have to be numbers on the front nowadays? I know that most teams have them, but I also know that usually the numbers were only on the back.

It is in the official Fifa rules that a number must be worn on the front of the shirt.

besides positioning, isn't there a requirement in the WC that the number are all 1 through 23 (or whatever the squad size limit it)? If I'm remembering correctly they want them all to be sequential and you can't be 44 or something like that, but I don't know since i don't normally pay attention to rules like these

The rules...
1. numbers must be 1-23, goalkeeper must wear #1
2. must have number on front, doesn't matter where as long as its on the front and clearly seen.

I think #18 also must be a goalkeeper, but that might be an Olympic rule only.

Is this the GK part of the rule a recent addition? I do recall as recently as 1986, Argentina had a field player wearing #1, as they numbered their player alphabetically. Such a rule wouldn't be a bad idea, anyway. Seems rather strange seeing #1 on anyone other than a keeper. About as strange as seeing a player wear 44 or 65.

i remember argentina tried to retire number 10 from the NT. fifa would'nt allow it, and said that if they wanted, they could have no one wear number 10, but take one less person to the WC.

1986, really? I remember Oswaldo Ardiles wearing number 1 in 1982 (I'm sure someone out there will be able to dig up a picture). 1986, maybe but I wouldn't put any money on this--could be my memory failing me though, which wouldn't be all that surprising...

What I wonder is how do you actually prevent a field player from wearing #1? Once in a while, you see a player such as Jorge Campos who was, indeed, a goalkeeper but occasionally played in the outfield.

Ardiles did wear #1 in 82, but the alphabetical numbering continued in 86 (Sergio Almiron, a forward) before they stopped the practice altogether.

Thanks for the heads-up! I have no recollection at all of Almiron playing in 1986. My guess is he didn't see a lot of action during that World Cup.
