I'm still surprised at how much people underrate Australia, their good worldcup/bad worldcup would be the same as japan and croatia. Australia has beaten a fair number of 'big countries' and has relativily good records against japan and croatia and that was before we had any sort of proper admin running the sport here and a great coach. I'm not saying that Australia is better than croatia or japan, but all 3 teams are about level and have as good a chance as the others of making it to the round of 16.

As much as it annoys me when people really underestimate them - i'd prefer it that way. We're always better as the underdog, and i'd rather sit back i'd hope we prove the critics wrong then go promoting ourselves to a level where it'll be embarrassing if they fail.

My prediction - advance to round of 16/quarters
Good - round of 16/respectable exit in groups
Bad - group exit and outclassed

As for brazil, you can't have anything other than win for a good world cup for them - there brazil and they're favourites (even though i don't think they'll win)

Brazil:

My prediction: second round or quarter-finals
Good: Cup winners
Bad: runners-up or worse

Australia:

My prediction: second round
Good: second round
Bad: no win in group stage

Croatia:

My prediction: first round
Good: second round or quarter-finals
Bad: first round and not beating Australia (ask Zlatko Kranjcar)

Japan:

My prediction: first round
Good: second round
Bad: losing all group matches

Brazil is getting so much praise and I think that they won't fulfill their promise. Look at 1982. The Selecao were the hot favourites, played attactive football and defeated teams convincingly. A World Cup win seemed like a forgone conclusion but Paolo Rossi steped up plenty of gears for Italy and sent Brazil packing.

Brazil
my prediction: 2nd in group, runners-up to WC
good: winning it all
bad: not reaching the semifinals (to me), not winning (to Brazilian's in general, I think)

Croatia
my prediction: win group, out in quarters
good: second round (one better than 2002)
bad: no wins

Australia
my prediction: last in group
good: second round
bad: no wins

Japan
my prediction: just behind Brazil
good: second round
bad: losing every match

yes because it's not progressing further,

It's not realistic to expect a team to do even better away from home. Especially a team with limited World Cup experience like Japan.

Getting to the second round would be good and should be their objective, but saying that a second round exit = a bad World Cup is nonsense.

Exceptional: 1/4 finals or better

you may find that a WC played in europe is a different kettle of fish to one played in the far east....(see S. Korea in 1998)
