Mutts PR man talks about how tough his job is. (http://nynj.matchnight.com/metroindex.cfm?page=ARTICLE&show=294)
The part that concerns us:
KD: You spent some time with the New England Revolution. How different is the soccer culture between the New England organization and fans versus your current position?
MC: The New England market is far less cluttered than the NY market. There is more mainstream interest in the Revolution than there is mainstream interest in the MetroStars in New York. In fact, I would go as far to say, that I have never seen as much mainstream interest in a soccer team as there was surrounding the 2002 New England Revolution. During their playoff run, they could be seen on the cover of sports pages, and they were often included in casual sports conversations in the area.
Having said that, I think that the soccer culture in NY market is far superior. The youth soccer participants in the area are generally more knowledgeable about the game and take the MLS more seriously, and there are more adult soccer purists.
Thoughts?
EDIT: Oh and don't forget next year's chant of "Bring on the fat kid" when we play the Mutts. If you watched MTV's "Made" you'll know what I mean. (http://www.mtv.com/onair/dyn/made/episode.jhtml?episodeID=97956)

True or not, being the Mutts PR guy, I wouldn't expect him to say otherwise...

It's probably in his contract. Standard NY procedure.

Can't be a Super Club otherwise!
I'm telling you, we need some kind of chant making fun of that.
The LI Rough Riders are the real NY metro-area soccer team!

"We all laugh at the New York Wannabes..."
Or
"The Rough Riders are better!"

Nice!
I suggest, "If you're a Super Club, we're (insert Euro Giant name)". My vote goes for Inter Milan, the Mutts looking like AC Milan, you get it...

how about something as simple as

I spend quite a bit of time in NY for work and I do try to ask people about the Metros (ironic that a Revs fan is telling locals that they ought to go check out the Mutts and Youri). Let me say that the Metros have no, zero, none, nada presence anywhere in Manhattan, and even less word-of-mouth visibility. I remember a few years ago a radio announcer once referred to Loathesome Matthaus as "Luther Matt-House."
I brought my Revs scarf, and gave some good-natured needling to some of the general NY sports fans in our office, and commented how my Revs gubbed "that mangy lot from the other side of the river" in last year's playoffs, but I actually had to explain that it was the Mutts in Giants Stadium that I was referring to. When you can't even talk trash in a regional sports rivaly, you know something is wrong!
When the Mutts open up in Harrison, they ought to have a subway ad campaign, specifically saying that you can take the PATH trains to the games. They have subway cars with all one company's ads, and that might be worth a shot for them.

i agree.....i have lived in manhattan for almost 2 years and all i have seen are VERY VERY tiny paragraphs in the morning metro paper and usually right around the start of the season z100 will mention them on the radio, but that's about it. i went to a game back in sept and i swear that some people (who have lived here for YEARS AND YEARS) i work with didn't even know the team exists. then there were the people who just thought it was hilarious that i even went to a mls game....

I lived on Long Island for 16 years (I shudder to even type that) and let me tell you MLS has ZERO visibility in the suburbs. You're talking about 90% of the NY Jets fanbase (esp. Suffolk County), people who drive out to the Meadowlands all the time, and they had no idea. I'm not kidding when I say the Rough Riders are the metro area team. They have (or at least did in the 90s) billboards, they have radio spots, they have visibility. Soccer on LI is massive. It is beyond sad that the league/Metros aren't trying to get these people.
