allright, I admit I ingorant about this - I understand the difference between the Champions league and UEFA cup, but I seem to remember Everton losing a lot of money because they got the last Premiership spot for the Champions league and lost in the first round
from the perspective of long term success, would it be better for the Spurs to get the UEFA spot this year where they could presumably win a few games rather than take the risk of having to go through early qualifying rounds in the Champions league? I don't see any of the games, but it does not look like the Spurs are gonna challenge to win the Champions league next year, so is it better to take the baby steps, get some players who see any European action on a team with great potential as a good place to sign, and set higher hopes for next year? or is even the qualifying rounds of hte champions league so lucrative that you want that at all expense?
just curious

I think just to be in the Champions League will raise the clubs profile more, we know we won't win the Champions League...yet :p
World class players want to play in the Champions League.

If we are offered to play in the champions league qualifying round then we take it. It gives us the oppitunity to try and play champions league football
If we get Uefa Cup i'll still be pleased since it's still European football and it would be progress/

Everton lost money?
Where and how did they do that?
What they lost out on was the opportunity to make money.
Finishing 4th in the league and going out in the qualifying round of the CL didn't cost them anything per se.

Baby steps? Like Boro you mean?
Strike while the iron is hot! We might be able to go to the UCL this year if we can beat Sunderland...crap.
Still, there's no promise that we'll have the chance next year. Maybe we'll have a bad string of injuries, or bad form, or bad luck...and then we've never gone to the UCL and our players want out.

If we can make it past the qualification rounds in CL, I think the difference in money is massive -- with UEFA cup you are usually playing some second rate Slovakian club until the CL rejects show-up. That doesn't bring the crowds or the TV money even if supporters show up in force at the Lane, something far from guaranteed looking at Bolton and Boro's attendance record at Uefa Cup matches so far.
Everton are a bit of a CL exception. They didn't have the money or squad depth to really compete in three domestic competitions and the CL -- we have squad depth and if Jol and Comolli deem is necessary we can plow 25 million or so over the summer and have the abililty to attract the star players to London. Everton missed out on a lot of quality players last summer because of money and doubts by players they would be more than a one off in the CL...

We're not good enough to make a mark in the Champions League, yet. Champions League football would be beneficial from a financial perspective.
I'd settle for either to be honest, since it's been a while since we were last in Europe.

I'd rather Champions league.
UEFA Cup is shite. The Champions league is where it's at.

I believe we'd start in the 3rd qualifying round of the CL if we finish 4th. If you win that qualifier, you're in the Group Stage. If you lose, you're still in the UEFA Cup. Seems like an ideal situation. If we're ready, we move on. If not there's still the Cup to fall back on.

That's right, it seems that people are confused about what happens if we crash out of the Champions League.
Everton, for example, lost against Villarreal in the Champions League, then played Dinamo-something in the UEFA cup.
So there's no question that Champions league is the better option, at least we have the chance to make a lot of money. And if we're not good enough, we'll play in the UEFA cup.

Well we have. We've played in the champions league 3 times, got to the UEFA cup semi final once and the quarter finals 3 times.
What have spurs done in europe the last 10 years?

doesn't matter. thats history which you jordis just love to talk about so much dont you.... FACT: spurs are a club looking forward and newcastle are a club that is in a downward spiral. so please stop making yourself look like a twat and stick to the newcastle boards if there is one ;)
