Apparently Gonzaga Bulldogs' fans have been engaging in a bit of less-than-proper jeering up in Washington, serenading opposing players with chants of "Brokeback-Mountain", obviously meant to send into question the sexual orientation of the players on the other team.

With Gonzaga's home crowd making an appearance on national TV, however, the school went into high gear to quell such behavior, and the negative publicity that would come from fans' cheering.

The reason that I thought this might make a good discussion for this forum is in the last couple of paragraphs of the article:
In Friday's Bulletin, (Gonzaga's school newspaper) senior Callie Monroe wrote a column calling the chants a case of "outright discrimination."

"Imagine yourself as a homosexual individual in the midst of your peers, classmates and friends during this 'Brokeback Mountain' cheer," Monroe wrote. "I simply do not understand how a student body claiming to live by Jesuit principles of acceptance and respect for all can allow an incident like this to happen and remain silent."

Roman Catholics, or Jesuit-educated folks: What do you think. Your church is unwavering in its anti-homosexuality stance. Is there a disconnect here between what this student calls "Jesuit principles" and the teachings of the Bishop of Rome, or is this a case of "loving the sinner... etc", or something else?

Since when do the Jesuits have anything to do with the Catholic church? :)

I suppose it's a case of "hate the sin, love the sinner".

Do we have the propaganda successes of Stalin and Hitler to blame for the last three decades of humorless "political correctness", or was it the baby-boomers "I blame my 'parents/drugs/environment/being teased' for my personal unhappiness" philosophy?

Umberto Eco's Name of the Rose was sadly prescient along these lines: all humor stems from cruelty and is therefore bad.

That's kind of funny. It's disrespectful, no doubt, but creative. I can just hear it now: "Broke-back Moun-tain clap clap clap clap clap." :)

Are we gonna be hearing about the same in NCAA women's games?

Mexico's media has gone wild with reports that Latina movie stars Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek have become lesbian gal pals.

Cruz and Hayek star together in the new western "Bandidas."

While doing movie promotion in Mexico, Cruz grabbed Hayek's butt and began caressing it in front of stunned Mexican photographers.

Now the pair can't seem to keep their hands off each other.

The lesbian rumors started flying, and neither Cruz nor Hayek seem interested in stopping the speculation.

Which brings up an interesting point - the vatican is all about banning gay would be priests from seminaries, but they are pretty quiet about the nuns...

Do they enjoy a little girl on girl like the rest of hetero men?

(edit - before anyone gets their panties in a bunch about catholic bashing, that's not what i was aiming for, as I've not been known for maliciously bashing my old faith - which I still often respect if not agree with. But what is the difference between gay male seminarians (huh huh), and lesbian women enterring an all-girl nunnery? Priests and nuns often perform similar tasks - I've seen nuns comforting the bereaved, and holding the blood of christ during communion. Surely they are equally wrong in god's eyes, and equally disruptive to their fellows?)

Screw you man. I had a great image in my head when I read "lesbian nuns" and you had to go and **** it up with that. Death by fire would be too good for you.

Hey, she's got great bone structure. I bet she was a real stunner when she was younger.

Speaking of bone structure, here's a new building permit for yours:

Penelope Cruz + Salma Hayek + The Love That Dare Not Speak Its Name?

How do you expect me to work while I'm thinking about that?

University of Utah fans broke out some Brokeback Mountain smack when BYU visited recently.

Stangely enough, I did not hear about them doing the same for Wyoming.

But Wyoming's team is usually pretty bad and not worth any good smack.

Whoops. Sorry about the picture, CD. Just too overly anxious to make amends, I suppose.

Ok, before we threadjack into posting images of fetish nuns, does anyone want to comment on why lesbian nuns are Ok or bad, as compared to homosexual catholic priests?

I'll, uh, check back here in an hour or so. Gotta do some, uh, research - yeah - reseach. That's it, research.

My guess is that there's about 4 or 5 nuns under 50 years old in the entire world, so it hasn't been much of a problem yet.

Sorry it's taken so long. My guess is (being a mere layman, not privy to Vatican discussions) is that the Vatican sees the recent pedophilia and ephebophilia scandals not as stemming from cover-ups, but as coming because of excessive tolerance in the US for homosexuality. Their belief (mistaken, I believe) is that, if the Church eliminates homosexuality from the seminaries, it follows that problems with molestations will disappear (wrong on several levels).

So, in short, my reading is that because "lesbian nuns" aren't causing any PR problems for the heirarchy in Rome, the hierarchy in Rome isn't going to be that worked up about it.
