Anybody else watching?

There's a lot of winter sports I have no interest in at all, but I do love watching about all of the skiing events, the speed skating events and -- my guilty pleasure -- curling.

Thumbs up:

Long-track Speed-Skating, Alpine and Nordic Skiing, Curling (seriously), Men's Ice Hockey, Luge

Thumbs down:

FIGURE SKATING, Women's Ice Hockey (I tried watching that today, oh god), Skeleton, Ski Jumping, Aerial Skiing (it looks like it would be cool, but as I figured out four years ago on some random midnight, it's not).

Also, some of these commentators are absolutely awful. They have ********ing Pat O'Brien as one of the studio analysts.

You can add me to the Curling fan list... One of the gret things about living in a border [CA] town in getting the other countries TV stations! Canadian Broadcasting Company plays its fair share of Curling, between the National Championships and The Scot Tournament of Hearts.

Plus international hockey is always a good thing.

I enjoyed watching the British women win the curling gold medal four years ago.

I doubt they can repeat it, but any sort of British medal would be welcome :)

Short-track speed skating is really cool. Apollo Anton Ono is one of favorites again. Last time he pissed off the Koreans which lead to their goal celebration against the US in the World Cup.

I also like the Olympic hockey.

I love Olympic Hockey. And I think the NHL finally realized that everyone says that same exact thing. Which means no more red line and much more entertaining games.

I like the Olympics always have winter and summer. Even sometime I regret the passing of the true Olympian spirit, although you still see that in countries that don't have the big corporate or college sponsorships. I'll Tivo jus about all of it and pass over the hockey, to the good stuff.

Pet peeves, and let's hear yours.

The strident "expert" announcers, who tell how it should have been done.
The, (Food)(travel)(dying mother)(hard upbringing) upset his stomach
The, It's not the performance he wanted today....(No shit!)
The, Pulled groin muscle
And... Didn't know until the last minute whether he'd get citizenship status in time.

Oh and the US/UK/NZ (take your pick) came 17 and 19th in barrel jumping today..................Who TF was first...?

Oooh, I'd forgotten all about that. The Korean won but then he got DQ'd, right?

Have to say i've never really had much interest in the olympics (summer or winter). But i really got into the snowboarding last night, with the Young ginger kid getting the gold.

That skating celebration at the last WC bugged me. As bad as the Koreans thought that short track decision was, the worst decision in Olympic history was in Seoul when they gave the win to the Korean boxer over Roy Jones Jr. Even the Korean fighter was shocked he was given the win, and since then it's come out that the judges were corrupted by Korean officials.

Friedel should have shadow-boxed after saving the Korean penalty. :D

That Roy Jones robbery almost made me cry. I was furious and had followed him that whole tournament.

At his best, Roy was untouchable and IMO the most dominant athlete in any sport.

Seriously, curling is exceptionally intense. I watched the US match against Finland yesterday, and I was on the edge of my seat.

Well it's started....the knives are out!

From the gutters of the "Letterman" Show to the lofty heights of Katie Curicks "Today" Show and ESPN. The flensing knives are in use.

"What happened to the American Skiers and other athletes and why didn't they come home with "GOLD"...?"

Their 'overhype' of Bode Miller (Gonna be nice not to hear that every 10 minutes) and the rest of the skiers and the speed skaters didn't come true. So now where do we put the blame. The talking heads are pointing fingers.

Nobody mentioned the chance that an athlete from another country might be better on the day. (as if)

So! Who are we going to crucify first and where would be an appropriate spot?

This whole Bode Miller thing is stupid. The only event he had a realistic shot of winning was the combined, and he got DQ'd on an honest mistake; something all the best skiers do now and then. Every other event he was a long shot to medal in. The problem is that you had all these dumbasses in the mainstream media who don't know anything about these sports put him on the cover of their magazines, making him out to be the savior of these Olympics. Sure, he was the World Cup champion, but all that means is that he is very good at all events, since World Cup points are determined based on every skiing discipline. He was never better than everyone else in an individual event, except the Combined (which probably best reflects his skill across all events anyway). But now he's being vilified because "he didn't deliver," when he really shouldn't have been expected to deliver in the first place.
