Hello, you probably don't know me around these parts, but I'm a regular on the Arsenal board. I'm looking for a member of Sam's Army I can speak to. In the real world I work for a PR company and a couple of our clients are FIFA World Cup sponsors.

If one of the organizers of Sam's Army could get in touch with me that would be great.

Thanks,

I know exactly what I'm talking about. Whether anyone else knows what I'm talking about is open for debate. The relevance of my posts to thread starter's queries is also open to debate.

The World Cup is now only a few months away. Where is Sam's Army?

In 1998, Sam's Army actually helped fans get tickets to the World Cup in France.

My long standing feeling is that Sam's Army's leadership needs to either lead or get out of the way. Instead, it does nothing, and others stand around waiting for "Sam's Army".

The fact is, organizationally, U.S. supporters are in a worse state than they were 8 years ago. While the numbers are growing, the lack of any organization - except when it comes to protecting the trademark - is appalling. And it's that very protection of the trademark that has become a hinderance. Spacone needs to let "Sam's Army" fall into the public domain. Let fans make scarves, t-shirts, banners without fear of legal retribution. The generic term "sam's army" is well known for USNT supporters, but the fact is, most supporters can't freely use the term.

Lead or get out of the way, that's all I've been asking for several years. I have yet to see anything develop from last year's public letter.

Andy, I think you are right. I don't mean to denigrate any of the people, including Marc, who have worked hard to build a fan base. Rishi, Bigdog, Kevin, Monty, Ed, Leo, Joe, Dan, Evan, Guy and many, many others have made all kinds of personal sacrifices. But organized fan support is in some ways worse than it was 8 years ago, and may get even worse after 2006. It doesn't have to be this way. But it is this way....The trademark is guarded like the last beer in the refrigerator but nothing else gets done. No one can organize Sam's Army for fear of the trademark issue. The result is chaos.

Gee, Andy, I didn't realize that Sam's Army has stopped you & others from organizing your own supporters groups & coordinating their attendance at events with USSF.
There's a guy on BS designing his own line of scarves, hats & shirts. Why don't you ask him for permission to organize Bruce's Army - maybe you can event copyright it, then license it to everyone for free like WWJD! http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=311707

TF: I'm not sure that the fact that these guys have organized things before or are currently organizing their own things for WC'06 imposes any responsibility on them to oversee the event for the rest of us. I don't get the impression that anyone at USSF coordinates with them. In fact, several of them have been busy trying to get themselves tickets for the USMNT matches in Germany! (I'm sure you know how frustrating that has been.) The number of die-hard USMNT fans is very small, perhaps a few hundred. I don't even consider myself a full member, although this will be my fourth World Cup! I'm just happy to see the Sammers at the events, I don't expect them to get me there or be my tour guide. I read YanksinGermany & get the emails. There's a good amount of info both here & on YiG. It's a low-budget, grass-roots organization. After this year's matches, IMO there will be no big demand for leadership until 2014. (I don't expect a big crowd in South Africa). If people really want an organized approach, I suggest that they contact USSF (well, maybe I'm expecting too much after the ticketing fiasco!).
P.S. I'm still hoping to see you there!

They aren't. And I haven't said that they did. The Yank Army, USA Supporters, and other groups have tried.

But as long as the TV announcers continue to mention "sam's army" and not refer to the "us supporter's section" there will continue to be issues with branding and lack of leadership.

I wish the guy well with his shirts. If he can get Balboa to start talking about "Bruce's Army" on broadcasts, then hopefully we'll start breaking free of the "Sam's Army" trademark problem.
