In case you are planning on renting a car while on your Germany excursion, you may also want to consider leasing a car from Renault's Eurodrive (http://www.renaultusa.com/) program. It's a lease, so it's a bit different from renting. Your stay has to be at least 17 days. You can pick the car up at most major airports, particularly in France. They deliver to the Frankfurt and Munich airports in Germany (at, I think, a $150 fee). While Renault is not as chic as a Mercedes or BMW, if you are looking for a good deal, they have them. It is my understanding that the lease comes with insurance that covers you in almost all EU countries, unlimited mileage, and not additional fee for a second driver, and if you rent from one of the major rental carriers, you either have to pay out the...well, alot, for insurance and may even have to pay more if you want to travel to Italy, Poland or the Czech Republic (countries that are easily within driving distance of Germany). Also, they have added two Nissan SUVs in addition to their Renault cars to choose from.

No, I don't work for Renault, or have any affiliation with them, but after spending much of 2 entire days analyzing costs associated with renting a car for 33 days, this was by far the best (and most economical - even for someone not travelling on a budget) option. My brother and I are renting a Nissan Pathfinder for 33 days for $3036 (all fees included). Just a suggestion for those staying for an extended period of time and are going to be getting a car.

You should look at buying a car, then selling it when you leave at that price!

Yeah, I've heard of that Renault programme ... only available to non-EU citizens, I believe.

Still, at 3k for 33 days, that's a fair bit of money. I searched high and low for a good car hire deal (have used Europcar, Sixt, Hertz and Budget in the past), and came across a company called Interrent (there are details here (http://www.theworldcupingermany.com/artman/publish/article_58.shtml)). From what I've read, it's a 100% subsidiary of Europcar, which in turn is a 100% subsidiary of VW, so it's a bona fide company. But they operate as a 'no frills' company, only hiring out one model (the VW Golf) and locating themselves in what you might call 'secondary' locations. Still, they are in nearly all of the World Cup cities.

I got a Golf for 22 days (June 8-29) for 420 euros (about 500 USD), including fully comprehensive insurance (could have got it for 245 euros, if I'd been happy with third party insurance only).

Anyone beat that?
