So I was just given a new laptop for grad school, and the advertised specs are a 40GB hard drive and 512MB RAM. Now I just checked the HD, and it says its 30.4GB, with 25.01 free. Is it just me or did either gateway screw up or do I just now get it? Also, it looks as though the RAM is 504. Should I be going back to Best Buy, calling Gateway, or what?

download and run that system information software and if does not match up with what you paid for, go kick up a fuss.

Well the advertised amount in GB does not factor in the fact that there are are 1024 bytes in a kilobyte, and work out the 40GB based on 1000 to a kilobyte. Work the difference up to 40 GB and it should be around 30+GB. Definately larger than 30.4 though. They may have partitioned the drive however, so the backup takes a fair amount of space. You have even less free probably due to the fact that dell/gateway etc. have a lot of preloaded software installed, some games, trial programs etc.

That's very true. You figure that Windows takes up a chunk, not to mention all the crap that came bundled. I can't imagine that it takes up nearly 10GB though.

You are, but seeing as how much you've had on your plate recently, I thought I'd give you a break. Besides, I'm still lining you up to help me set up a network in the house! :D
