The University of Victoria coach takes a pretty harsh slap at Holger Osieck:
"Winning the Gold Cup was really such a nonevent,'' Wilson said. "By the reaction from some people, you would think we had won the World Cup. Being the national coach was a big issue for me at one time. Maybe it is again, I don't really know. But I don't understand how a coach fails to take a team to the World Cup and gets a new contract. Anywhere else in the world he would be gone."

It is easy to talk behind the safety of a Canadian university coaching job.
Coaching Canada at this point is not an easy thing to do because we don't have a national league and our players are scattered all across Europe.

I have no idea. I find it very odd that the NY Times would care about Canadian soccer.

Perhaps because Canada plays more games in the USA than it does at home.

Who is this guy Wilson? Was he a candidate for the job? I hope not considering his "The bad man took my lollipop" reaction. I'd say for a non-power like Canada to win the Confederation's championship tournament is a huge event. Like Wales walloping not just Italy but actually winning the UEFA Cup. Except Wales does have a national league, although none of the Nats play in it.
Boo on Wilson...

He was a Canadian International player when they last made the World Cup (in Mexico '90) and was/is a national team coach prospect. He played for about 14 seasons in the NASL. Pretty solid credentials.
He is pretty critical, but a lot of his criticism is even-handed or just plain honest. He doesn't blame the US for not permitting Canadians to play unrestrictedly in MLS and freely admits that Canadian soccer is limited by not having a viable league for their own players - that isn't really a slam on Osieck. He knows that Osieck's hands are tied by player availability.

My bad. Don't know why I put down '90.
