DC United press release
D.C. United Acquires Defender Galin Ivanov
Second Player Allocation Used to Select Bulgarian International

CHANTILLY, VA (January 28, 2003) - D.C. United announced today that defender Galin Ivanov has signed a contract with Major League Soccer and will be allocated to the club. D.C. United used its sole remaining player allocation, acquired in December's blockbuster trade with the MetroStars, to gain the services of the Bulgarian international.

"Galin's experience as a top flight defender for his club team and in European and National Team competitions will add stability to our back line," said D.C. United Technical Director Dave Kasper. "With the collection of talent that we have assembled, we are excited to begin preparing for the season."

Ivanov comes to the District after playing eight seasons in the Bulgarian Premier League, the last six of which were spent with powerhouse club CSKA Sofia. Since 1997, the 27-year-old Ivanov has appeared in 136 matches for the Sofia-based side and cemented himself as the club's starting central defender. Ivanov tallied eight goals in 186 contests during his career in Bulgaria's top-flight league.

Ivanov has also made five appearances on the Bulgarian "A" National Team, most recently as a substitute in a pair of qualifying round matches in the UEFA EURO 2004 competition. Ivanov began his international career in the youth ranks, making seven appearances for the Bulgarian U-18 team and earning 25 appearances for the country's U-21 squad.

The 6-foot, 172-pound Ivanov is the second player from Bulgaria to join the Black-and-Red this week. D.C. United yesterday acquired his fellow countryman and footballing legend Hristo Stoitchkov in a trade with the Chicago Fire. Stoitchkov's duel role as a player-assistant coach is expected to help ease Ivanov's transition to his new club and country. The two Bulgarians were teamed together briefly in 1998 when Stoitchkov made a short return to CSKA Sofia.

"Galin is the hairy-chested Bulgarian I've always wanted," added United Head Coach Ray Hudson. "He is a high quality, blue-blood defender with a lovely touch, superb tactical awareness and great athleticism. He will add steel and composure to our back line and his experience at the top-level just add fuel to the fire."

Without getting into prognostic debates, I think we can all agree now that this season will be worth watching...this coming from a man who would sooner watch his extremeties dipped in boiling acid than suffer another miserable DC United season.

Ball skills to complement Reyes and cover for Petke. It sounds as if he might be able to move up into midfield to assist Nelsen some times as well. Six foot may not be big internationally, but for MLS it's big enough. I'm cautiously optimistic about Ivanov.

I though blue blooded = Lazy.

Did Ray mean to say "blue collared", which would imply the guy was hard working but unskilled...............

"Blue-blooded" in Hudson speak means that he of premium quality: i.e. better than the common player.

Sounds like a great addition.

blue blooded often means "of known pedegree," which would seem appropriate here.

According to dictionary.com:

blue blood also blue·blood (blbld)
n.
1) Noble or aristocratic descent.
2) A member of the aristocracy.

Ray was probably trying to say that Ivanov is a high quality class player.

Mixed in with the metaphor of "Hairy Chested" the "blue-blood" reference is Hudson-speak for "spends a lot of time in pubs--with his shirt open."

hmmmmm.... in that case, I guess I am also a "hairy-chested, blue-blood" kind of guy. :D

Not to mention that Ivanov and I have very similar first names. I'm thinking we could be a classic "bar duo", in the tradition of the "Roxbury Guys" and the "Two Wild and Crazy Guys" (Steve Martin & Dan Aykroyd, IIRC).

Welcome to DC, Galin! First round is on me!

(note to self: more coffee, less martini in the morning....)

Now, don't be hasty!

;)

And look, you've still got time to scamper down to RFK with your camera:

Ivanov will join his new teammates this morning for conditioning training and will be introduced to the media with Stoitchkov this afternoon at 2:00 p.m. ET in the media room at RFK Stadium.

Also, according to the roster page, Ivanov will wear #3.

Eric, with all his photo shop and counterfeiting skills could come up with a BigSoccer media all access pass in no time. ;)

By my calculations, the additions of Hristo and Ivanov mean that either Namoff, Curtis or Alegria are gone if we add Harkes, or anyone else. Given that we have 18 full roster spots and Ivan McKinley will not be with the team, here's what I see for the full roster spots:

GK Rimando
GK Warren (Not P-40)
D Ivanov
D Petke
D Reyes
D Prideaux
M Etch
M Convey
M Olsen
M Nelsen
M Kovalenko
M Eliseo
M Alegria
M Namoff
F Stewart
F Santino
F Stoichkov
F Curtis

Of course there's always the possibility that we could trade someone like Prideaux or Petke for value, but at this point I kind of doubt that we'll do that.

If Ivanov is as good as advertised our back line is going to be extemely solid next year. Even if we flip flop Nelson and Ivanov which i think is a possibility we will still have a very solid back three. I think with these additions we have an excellent chance of being the next worst to first story.
But also after reading this
"Galin is the hairy-chested Bulgarian I've always wanted," added United Head Coach Ray Hudson
Im starting to wonder about Ray

Given that none of us have ever seen this guy play, I hope he is worth the build up that Ray is giving him. I would expect Namoff to choose to go to Richmond as there does not appear to be many minutes for him with United. Alegria and Curtis also could be in question for the final roster. I can't wait for the team to get in some pre season scrimmages and matches.

I agree with Kevin in saying that Namoff is the first to go, and I'm wondering if Brian would actually like that since he could then play (actually play) for Richmond rather than ride the pine in RFK, not even making road trips.
