As previously posted, Hristo to DC, but I figured this warranted its own thread, since Goff mentions that the Ivanov (HCB2, I guess, since we've got Hristo now) deal might be finalized Tuesday, Dalglish is still in the picture, and a decision on Captain For Life is apparently still a few weeks away.

Of note:

Financial terms were not revealed, but a source close to the team said Stoitchkov, once one of the highest-paid players in the world, is "playing for pennies" to remain in MLS and acquire coaching experience.

Let's see....

We have Nelsen.
We just got Stoichkov.
Ivanov (HCB2) is en route.
Dalglish is interested.

3 SI spots, unless Hristo doesn't really count....but if he does, then Nelly will get shipped off.

I wouldn't be too excited if we dump Nelly for some Division 2 hack.......unless his sister were to attend games.

his sister is about as hot as he is a soccer player - strictly 2nd division.

Exactly right.

Unfortunately for Dalglish, the feeling probably is no longer mutual.

No way we dump Nelsen for a guy who is only interested in us because he couldn't find anything better.

In the article:

He will be introduced at a news conference today at RFK Stadium.

Any of our intrepid photographers planning on attending?

No way Hudson drops Nelsen in favor of Dalglish. Just ain't gonna happen.

Heck I'll go by and take some pictures. Do you have to have a press pass or something? Anyone have info on whether I could just walk in? Anyone know where/what time?

Perhaps Hristo secured his Green Card? Just a thought

I believe MT Nets is correct. There has been more than one poster saying that Hristo was vigourously working on getting a green card.

Why in the world would anyone want Harkes for a leadership role? I seem to remember back when Bruce Arena tried to move him into the back, he behaved like a petulant child. His "maturity and leadership" cost him the captain's armband at United and a trip to France. Sorry, he just doesn't seem to bring much to the table no matter how cheap he is. If he does get signed, I suspect Hristo the Magnificient in an act of real leadership, will slap the pretty off his face for slacking off long before the opener.

Didn't know there was one.
What I was reading was the all time MLS stats. In 7 years he played in 167 games, scored 16 goals and had 42 assists from 200 shots. His last goal was in 2000, and he had no goals and only 2 assists with the Crew in 739 min. of playing time. Hope that doesn't confuse anyone.

Goal scoring stats are nice but that is not the role expected of him if he came here. It would be that of a backup midfielder. I however am refering to your statment "His "maturity and leadership" cost him the captain's armband at United and a trip to France". Steve Sampson's fear and arrogance cost John a trip to France. Sampson played the 3-6-1 which Harkes obviously considered foolish. Then since the team seemed to have more respect for Harkes than Sampson then Harkes had to be removed. As I recall the US scored 1 goal in three matches. Finished 32nd out of 32 teams. Thus Harkes attitude did not cost him the trip. Also Harkes was going to be traded so it was time to transition the captain's armband to someone the club was going to hold onto. Hope those stats don't confuse anyone.

Nick and Ed I agree with you both. Harkes spoke up with Sampson and it cost him. Too bad the coach had such a fragile ego. On the other hand I don't really think Harkes brings much to the table anymore, except to stimulate warm fuzzies in the United faithful. We'll have enough locker room leadership. John Harkes has always been good at taking care of John Harkes, which is fine. That's what this situation is all about (with a little bit of marketing sizzle for a taste of the high notes!).

Well then lets make a fair comaprison. Harkes would be replacing McKinley's role and roster spot. What does McKinley bring to the table that Harkes does not? Frankly both are comparable at this point and Harkes would cost less which is a big point in his favor. He would not be due a promised raise.

Apparently Ross Paule has just come available. I can't imagine his price would be much different than Harkes', but he's significantly younger and similarly (if not more) versatile.

Of course, there are plenty of people who think Paule just plain sucks -- but nevermind, seems like he'd be worth consideration at least.
