Get hammered.

Or in the week before hand try and change your sleep patterns to match the place where you are going.

Just sleep a few hours a night before the trip. Then sleep on the plane, and you'll be fine by the time you get off.

don't have any caffiene for a week or so leading up to your flight. when you get on the plane take some nyquil after you have your meal (if you have one). drink some wine with the meal as well, you'll be out like a light for the whole flight. and since you purged your body of caffiene if you get tired the first day you are there you can drink some coffee or something and it will be more effective. get on the sleeping pattern of the place you arrive ASAP.

Just sleep a few hours a night before the trip. Then sleep on the plane, and you'll be fine by the time you get off.Unless, like me, you then can't sleep on the plane and end up delusionally tired in a strange country :)

When I go to Europe, I go directly to my apartment or whatever, get settled, and sleep for a couple of hours (3 maximum). Usually this means waking up around 5pm or so -- I then have enough energy to enjoy the first evening/night, but I'm still tired enough to sleep normally that night.

As for coming home, I don't have that figured out. I'm dead tired for 3 days.

Yeah I thought I was fine after coming back from Europe at 11 pm and going to work the next day, and actually lasted for 2 days... and then I could barely walk over the weekend.

You crazy people and your jet-lag. Have made long trips to the Middle East 4 times in my life, and to Europe twice. Never ever been hit by the slightest bit of jet-lag.

Well don't be a hoarder about it. Tell us how you do it.

If I had a secret, I would divulge it. I just don't get jet-lag, I'm just used to the travel I guess.

Doesn't bother me in the slightest either. :)

I've never flown far enough away to get jetlag, but if it's all due to disrupted sleep patterns I think I'm safe....wait....is that a good thing? Hmmm.

So, you arrive in a place where it's 9am, but your body has been awake for 20 hours and is telling you it's time to sleep -- and you're not tired??? I'm sorry, I have to call shenanigans here. Shenanigans!!

Going to sleep isn't so much the problem. When I used to travel to Europe all the time, I'd be tired around 10pm or so, and could go to sleep with little trouble. The problem was that for the first few days, I'd end up waking up around 2-3am and then wouldn't be able to go back to sleep til 7am, which would only give me an hour or so before having to get back up to start the day.

The best thing is to take some sleeping pills before you go to bed, they help you stay asleep throughout the night. Do that for a few days, and your body should be ok. :)

That's about right. Insomnia and a lifetime of chronic sleep depravation has it's upside. :)

I remember being out all night in Edinburgh, heading straight to the airport to fly direct to Australia, having a full day when I arrived and then going out that night for my first all nighter over there!

By my last count, I've crossed the Atlantic 38 times(19 trips) over the last 14 years (to Ireland usually). What I usually do is a for few nights before, I go to sleep an hour or 2 later than normal. Then the day of the trip, I sleep in late, do a rigourous workout at the gym. Drink lots of water throughout the day and have a big meal before I get on the plane so I dont have to bother with the airplane meal. By the time I'm airbourne, I'm pretty tired and fall asleep no problem. Still when I get to Ireland, I usually nap for about 2 hours later in the afternoon. And then I'm fine. This has also worked for my young kids too.

Regarding caffeine, I don't drink coffee anyway. Best to just drink water for hydration, avoid alcohol/sugary drinks if possible. Also bring some of your own snacks for the plane.

Has anyone ever flown RyanAir? They have some really cheap flights and I'm wondering if they're a ************ airlines or not...

It's a cheap flight for a reason. You need to buy your own food for a start. However, it gets you there and that's what counts...

They're cheap but effective. Just beware of possible hidden costs - e.g. when they fly to Paris they land at a tiny airport half an hour outside the city so you need to get a shuttle bus in.
