I'm going to be in San Francisco for the FA Cup final. I can find a list of soccer bars but I would still like a recommendation if anyone has one.

Couldn't be helped. Even us top reds need to honor family commitments.

The early kickoff is the only reason that my wife is up for it. I'm going to turn her into a top red, too.
Edit: The Scouser mod helped me out. Nice guy.

Gonna be the day after my graduation from Uni, so I can't get to hammered the night before. It'll all be worth it if we get that cup though. The defeat to the Arse in 2005, when we completely dominated the entire match, still rankles. It's time to get another one.

I have some questions for the Americans in the audience - does anyone know how long it would take, by road, to travel from southern Maine (roughly the Portland area) to Baltimore? I know last year it was 6-7 hours to New York, but your country's so damn big I can't estimate properly.
In a similar vein, how far away is Baltimore from Asheville, North Carolina?
Finally (for now), are internal flights usually cheap?
Basically, I'm going to be in Maine again for most of the summer, and since last year I didn't have time after work to get beyond Boston/Cape Cod/New York I have a lot of places I want to get to, and some of last year's friends to visit - hence Baltimore. The problem is that a couple of guys I became friendly with in Spain this year, one of whom lives in Tucson, have also invited me to go road-tripping along the New Mexico, Mexico, Cali, Arizona region.
I want to do both, but I don't know how viable it is time- and fund-wise to move down the east coast and then fly to Tucson, bearing in mind that whatever I do I'll have to get back to New York in the end to get the transatlantic flight back. I have 3, maybe 4 weeks to play with altogether.
Hit me.

A flight from the east coast to Tucson certainly wouldn't be cheap, especially since we don't really have those cut-rate flights like in Europe. Probably at least $250 round trip including all taxes and fees.
Maine to Baltimore should take you about a day to drive (500 mi according to Google Maps), and the same for Baltimore to Asheville.

Check out hotwire or expedia or something similar for flights, you might be able to get a good deal.
As for the Maine to Baltimore trip... you are very brave. Just make sure you have a comfy car that has AC. It would be better to fly if you ask me.

Thanks for the quick responses and advice.
I was afraid the flights would be approaching that kind of money - one of you guys should invest in a Ryanair/easyjet equivalent for internal flights, there's definately a market niche if Europe's anything to go by! I got to Albacete and back for $70 a few weeks back, and I'm looking at going to Oslo before I head to the States for less again. Cheers for the links, Ray.
The bad news for me is that a car would only be a factor for the Tucson/Cali/Mexico side of things - on the east coast, unless I make some very handy friends in the meantime, I'd be dependant on bus, rail, or flights. 6 hours on a Greyhound bus last year almost robbed me of my will to live - am I right in thinking that there aren't really any better public transport options via road though? Maybe I should look at flights :o

Well Amtrak isn't too bad. I've taken it a few times between here and Boston and it's not that bad of a trip. You usually have more than enough room to stretch out, and for me, the 3 hour trip yielded about 10 minutes of actual nice scenery. I'd definitely stay away from buses tho, they're cramped and there's no bar car.
Just compare the prices between Amtrak and flights, but given how far you're traveling, my guess is it'll be cheaper and definitely quicker to fly.

I've made the Baltimore to Maine trip by car (as part of the longer trip from Tennessee) and I remember it taking 8-10 hours going at a pretty decent pace. That fecking Jersey turnpike can be a killer if there is a wreck or traffic stoppage of any sort though. I would definitely take a flight unless you would be stopping at places along the way.
How late into the summer are you going to be in Maine, Leto? I'll be up probably the first week of September if you're still around.
