yeah im spending 3 weeks in Frankfurt, Koln, and Berlin with my two buddiesGive yourself lots of time in Berlin. You could stay there for the entire 3 weeks and not get bored.

Koln on the other hand is, um, well . . . You get off the train, the Dom is RIGHT there, and then you eat . . . ?? I ran out of things to do there fast. (No offense, Koln enthuisiasts)

Never really liked Frankfurt, as it's a financial city. Koln is not bad. Berlin is one of my favourite places in the entire world (top 5) and I can easily see myself living there at some point.

Did you hit Tacheles at any point Sapphire?

We'll be in Berlin for the most part which im extremly happy about, and not exactly in Frankfurt but in Bad Nauheim which is 10 minutes outside and where we have relatives. But we'll spend days and nights in Frankfurt. Is there anything exciting to go in Koln? Any suggestions for any of these three citys?

I DID see Tacheles!! I hadn't heard of it, and I was on the wrong bus at some point (the story of my life when travelling; I'm directionally impaired), and these two guys from Colorado I met on the bus insisted I follow them there. It was a twist a fate. And a cool arthouse. I was confused at first because it's basically a falling-down building.

Lol, I already have tickets for my trip to Berlin in March! Meeting there with a bunch of friends. Probably will spend 3-4 days, then take a train to Prague. Heard the nightlife there is pretty wild.

Right now on a "must-see" list in Berlin are Pergamon, Brandenburg Gate and Potsdam, but I haven't really started any planning. Sapph, any other great places there for visiting during daytime? Or not daytime ;)

Me and some friends (Chaz_Striker if you remeber his poor quality posts being one of them) are taking a trip from May 29 to June 27 this summer involving London, Manchester, the Lake District, Edinburgh, Dublin, Barcelona.

I was wondering if any of you Europeans (or American travelers) had any advice about these cities and stuff we should do or just anything in general.

Also, definatelly staying in Manchester 1 night so we can do the stadium tour etc. but is there enough in the area to stay 2 nights or no?

Depends what you are into. I was there (London) a few years ago and there were some great clubs. If you're into dancing at all, there was a club in Soho called The Limelight. It was an old converted church, mutilple types of music on a couple different floors. There was also a Bar One in Richmond that was nice. A 'posh' area as they would say, more of just a hang out/meet up feeling, very fun. Also make sure you check out a couple of the locals for a nice pint or two (or 3 or 4...).

Multiple music types sound good, but those tend to be more expensive, right? We're budgeting about 30-40 $ a day for 'activities'.

To be honest I don't remember a cover charge, but depending on your thirst level, it can get a little pricey.:) If you're good with a couple pints you'll get out on a few pounds. You'll have to remember England is fairly expensive. Depending on what 'activities' means, you'll have to be a bit frugal on 30-40 dollars/day.

You can still have lots of fun.

I love you. :o

Great to see a fellow fan of Berlin. I just love everything about the place. The contrast between East/West and places like Potsdamer Platz/Potsdam. Throw all of the history into the mix and it makes it even better. That's before we discuss the nightlife, with its crazy clubs, beer halls, Cabaret, Jazz bars... and best of all, Cafe Zapata (the bar in Tacheles). I can't wait to become an official Berliner. (p.s. anyone going simply must go on the following tour: http://www.brewersberlintours.com/index.php?sitecat=tour&page=AllDayBerlin).

Don't get me started on Budapest with it's Turkish baths, Statue Park, the Citadel, markets, secret bars, Communist history, castle, Marxim restaurant...

*breath*

:D

(edit: and Prague, superb...)

Right now on a "must-see" list in Berlin are Pergamon, Brandenburg Gate and Potsdam, but I haven't really started any planning. Sapph, any other great places there for visiting during daytime? Or not daytime ;) In Berlin, I pretty much wandered around. I had one really great day going to the Brandenburg gate, and then walking through the city park (Tiergarten), climbing a tower with an angel at the top, stumbling upon a memorial to Soviet soldiers, walking through shops on Unter den Linden -- in short, I'd recommend wandering around close to the Brandenburg gate, and wandering in general really, if you're into that (I can't tell you how much cool street art, not to mention interesting people, I ran into all over Berlin).

Not to sound cheesy or anything, but I walked along where the wall used to stand (they have bricks lining its old path throughout the city), and it felt really haunted by history. There are places where you're walking down the street with the former east on one side and former west on the other, and the difference was stunning. In other places, the bricks disappear under buildings that have been built up right over where the wall used to run. Berlin is one of those cities that really has a distinct feeling and vibe to it, and I felt it most strongly walking along the old wall. Also, you should visit this old bombed out cathedral they left standing after WWII, and they built an ultra-modern church (not sure of the actual architectual genre--looked Modernist to me) next to it -- it's called the Kaiser Wilhelm.

Um, there lots of cool places to go in the Kudamm (sp? which is an area kind of close to the train station) and in Potsdam. I have a journal I kept there, I should read through it again--maybe I have some specific names of clubs or other places I could drop for you later. I remember I stayed in a hostel called Aletto that I would highly recommend.

The same backpackers that took me to the Tacheles (which I recommend highly if you're into art) told me that I had to take a bus tour of Berlin. It sounded kind of corny to me, as I don't like traditional city tours with all the seniors, but I did it. I would recommend a bus tour to you on the first or second day there, because Berlin is a huge sprawling city and you WILL NOT get to see all of it. The bus tour let me see a few of the things I otherwise wouldn't have, and gave me a better idea of the things I wanted to seek out.

Oh, and go to the Communism Museum in Prague (I'll buy you a beer if it takes you less than an hour to find it  )

Melbourne just shades it. I've been there three times and loved every second. It's a great city for culture (food, music, art...) and you don't get hit with all the tourists like most other cities. The Australian life is really relaxed and the city is sport mad. For me, Melbourne combines everything I really like. I spent 5 months there the last time. The only down side is the time difference and not being able to just jump on a plane and hit Europe on a whim. I'm not sure if I could sacrifice traveling at this point in my life, which is why I would probably settle there later on.

Whenever I get the chance. I traveled quite a bit with my family when I was younger. My Dad did a lot of flying for business and had platinum cards for most airlines, so there were times when he and I would fly to America for a weekend to get rid of air miles that were about to expire. Since I ditched the rents, I've heading out to Europe numerous times, either for a weekend or a extended period. My mate and I went around Europe by rail when we left school and after that I headed back to Australia for a while. Being so close to Europe clearly has its advantages. There was even a time when we ditched school, flew to Stockholm, got pisssed and then came back the next day! I'm stuck at uni now so my traveling has been curtailed a bit, but I fully plan on hitting America again (will be 21 next month) and going around the world when I leave.

* unfortunately my passport has now expired (just checked), so I am pretty ********ed for now. I'll need to get that fixed asap. :( :(

Well I went 2 summers ago with a school group to London, Paris, Wengen Switzerland, Florence, Venice Rome. That was nice but a little quick for me. Wengen is an amazing village in the Alps. I wish I could live there I'm sure it is expensive though (maybe in 30 years...).

I plan to see most of UK and Ireland this trip, at least the rest of the high-points. My time is limited on this trip because of job and parents, sadly. My next trip I would like to tour Germany and the low countries (by myself or with a female).

In general Europe is better than USA to me. :D
