Personally its different for me.
Since I grew up Chicano:eek: and my parents were always pushing the "white" on me.
Go find yourself a white girl, have white friends etc...
After doing that for the majority of my life, after college I realized more about myself.
Primarily because I dated and still am with a Mexicana (born and raised). She showed me que es ser latino again. She didnt just push Mexicanismo on me either.
Anyways...
four years later..
I like to say I'm Peruano, especially in the presence of other latinos...
How do others feel? Does it make no difference to you to say you're Peruano or what?

It happens.
If you dont really have a big family. And there arent other peruvians in the neighborhood. The latinos (aka other brown skin people) around are in general mexican.
So you grow up with those mannerisms.
So how do other people here feel about being Peruvian?

Being born here, makes me feel different than the real peruanos back in peru. Same can be said about peruanos born in peru and moved to the USA, when you go back to peru, you feel different there, when you come back, you feel different in the US.
My parent dont push the white thing on me, I hate people being something that they're not. Went to private school up to 8th grade, when I got to HS, like being let free, I love it.
jlscrub, where are your parents from?

i've always represented....for as long as i can remember.
my household and family throughout the NY/NJ area always lived the full peruvian life, with the food, the slang, the parties, the fighting....the culture overall.
even though i was born here, i have always told people i am full peruvian blood. they all realize that i don't have a latino accent but a regular northeast accent and assume already anyway that i'm from here but there's no denying how and by who i was brought up.

I hear you. The vast majority of the friends I've ever had have been taco-eaters. They're actually real cool.
I'm happy being Peruvian. Mexicans seem to think it's exotic or something, at least the US-born Mexicans. A lot of times I've heard them say "you're from Peru? Oooooh" And I've yet to meet a girl that doens't like our accent :)
I've made it a point to keep my Peruvian accent even though I've been living here since I was 8. All the Mexican friends that I have I speak to in English.

i was borni n olima and moved to madrid when I was 5 , always remember Peru when I was in spain, always telling the spaniards "IM PERUVIAN, YOU RESPECT ME THIEVES OR ILL BVEAT THE SH!T OUT OF YOU" everybody was white there and I was latino, grew up with the music (criolla, salsa, merengue, etc) moved to Jersey at the age of 13 , bt b4 i septn 3 month vacations in Lima, and I love PEru I always wore my blankiroja to HS, fought for Peru in NT games (the worst fights were at Peru-Colombia and Peru-Brazil of this eliminatories) , when sombody said sumthing about Peru, or make fun of Laura, and of course meter cuxillazos cuando un negro me choreo mi cell nuevo q acababa de comprar. Even I grew up in spain i try the hardest to have a peruvian accet and the slang, i talk to all my friends in "PERUVIAN" i use words like causa, concha, webon, cojudo, ************ , etc . and I dont get no words form other nationalities, webonazosss!! I love being peruvian and i dont have the same respect to others that aint peruvian that the ones that are peruvians!!!
contigo Perú
sobre mi pecho llevo tus colores
