Yeah. Very true, I find that Decaprio ruins a lot of movies, two that come to mind Gangs of New York and Blood Diamond. HE is a big name, but other actors were better in both of those movies. And his accents suck.I was talking about the Departed and then Blood Diamond to a South African friend and his American Dad last weekend. They made the same comments on the accent.
I know a lot of people smoke but some equate smoking and acting, like you can't do one without the other. Keefer Sutherland used to do the same thing, so now every time I see his name on a movie, I avoid it. Fresh smoke every scene. Anytime a woman sticks a cigarette in her mouth....bang goes any sex appeal.
The cynic in me suggests that they get paid by Philip Morris.

In the Departed it really stands out since Marky Mark and Matt Damon are native to the accent and Jack is always Jack and no one listens to his accent.

Yeah I went to the movie with my friend from Kenya and he has visited South Africa and he just laughed the entire movie at his attempt at the accent. He tried the Irish accent in the Gangs of New York, not very good either.
The smoking thing is ridiculous as well, and I agree with you there.

As entertaining as it was, The Departed was such a joke. I really enjoyed it, but it was a total cartoon.
Damon and Wahlberg may be from Boston, but their accents were pretty awful. And Martin Sheen was just terrible in that movie.
Great for eating popcorn to, but what a farce of an Oscar winner. Half Nelson and The Lives of Others were infinitely better. Then again, ever since Crash won for Best Picture, the Oscars are pretty much dead to me.

"Stranger Than Fiction"
A lot, lot beter than I guessed it would be. Will Ferrell did an excelent job. Off beat and clever dialog for a comic tragedy.
Maggie Gyllenhaal is a lot easier on the eye than her brother. :) and Hoffman doesn't overemote, for a change. Drags a tad at the end but I can forgive that.

Did you think The Godfather was an accurate portrayal of New York gang life?
These things are all cartoons!:D

Just rented and watched Green Street Hooligans starring Frodo. Feelings are mixed. The movie jus leaves me with a some questions. Is this how things still happen? Do all clubs really have firms, or is this movie in the mold of American overreaction and misrepresenting fans?
Is it bad that I can't help but laugh at West Ham's club song?
I also rented Miracle Match (used to be called Game of their Lives, don't know why they changed the name) and Lucky # Slevin. I'll get back after I watch both.

I guess by changing the title of "Game of their lives" where a bunch of Scottish and other Euro immigrants come off with a win in some forgotten 67 year old memory against England, to go nowhere in the World Cup. The makers are trying to equate it with "Miracle on Ice" Where a bunch of US college thugs out beat a bunch of Russian thugs with sticks on ice to get nowhere in the Olympics.
Miracle on Ice is closer to Green St Hoolies in it's premise.
Lucky # Sleven is excellent. Watch the first 10 minutes and characters closely.

Miracle Match was just another American soccer/sports movie directed towards younger kids and families. They don't really address the fact that the USA World Cup team got beat pretty handily by both Spain and Chile. I have seen a lot of soccer movies, all made by USA producers and directors.
Anyone have any suggestions for some good soccer movies?

"Shut up and Sing"
Really worth watching, the documentary of what happened with the Dixie Chicks when one of them told a London audience that she was ashamed that GWB came from the same State as her.
"Freedom of speech is fine as long as you don't do it in public"
I was never a Dixie Chick fan but these girls Rock!
My wife was really going at these people for their vilification and "Death threats" of the Chicks.
There's a whole nuther America out there woman.

When they came to DC my whole family went -- I kind of like them and my wife and dauhter had already seen them --- but it seemed a civic duty to visibly support them. They came out to "Hail to the Chief" and opened with "I'm not ready to make nice". Place went nuts. Buck Fush.

Heard of the Dixie Chicks, but never heard their music. Reminds me
I saw Hayseed Dixie kick off their UK tour on Saturday. I love those
guys, their just interested in booze, chicks and playing damn hard.
Back on topic has anyone recommended 'Whithnail and I'? 80's witty,
dark comedy with Richard E Grant and Paul Mcgann desperate to escape
a seedy run down London and set in 1969. Richard Griffiths (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0341743/) gives a
proper scary performance. Well recommended for those who haven't seen it.
Its not fast paced and not much action. But plenty of memorable scenes
and quotes.

Have to check Netflix for that one.
I finally got around to Blood Diamond last night and actually thought it was good.
I knew enough about the real story there and the films story line woven into it was quite passable. Plus Jennifer Connelly is easy to watch.
Djimon Hounsou (Solomon Vandy) was excellent in the part.
In real life, the merceneries stopped the killing and brought some order to the country and were welcomed by the population but then the United Nations made them pull out and it all started over again. Simple version

I read the book by P.D. James in the early '90s and enjoyed it then.
Last week I finally got hold of a copy of the movie "Children of Men" and 'really' enjoyed it. Outstanding way the director caught the mood of the story. It's filmed in colour but you get the feeling it's in greyshade.
This is one movie I'm going to keep a copy of.

It's quite a distinctive style, and an unshaven Clive Owen tends to make it look greyer than it actually is! I really liked it. There's a scene towards the end of the film wheer Owen's character is running through a street battle, and it has a very long single shot that is brilliant.

Watched a movie from Chile last night "Machuca" about a couple of schoolboys and their families on opposite sides of the tracks and politically divided, during events leading up to the CIA backed Allende murder (Assassination) and Pinoche's military coupe.
Pinoche's thugs found that the fulbal stadia were ready made prison camps and torture blocks.

I saw Hot Fuzz last weekend.
I have mixed feelings about it. The first half dragged on forever, providing very few humorous things. The last half was hilarious though, the action scenes that were farces of American action films were very funny.
I liked Shaun of the Dead better.

"The Wind that shook the Barley"
A must see that captures the Irish war for Independence and subsequent civil war very well through a small village and two brothers. I give it 4 stars.

Sorry to bring this one up again but watched it again yesterday, first time in along time. I would love to hear opinion from across the pond, ex pat or native. If anyone chooses is it as a random choice/lucky dip, I will happily watch whatever film they they recommend I watch.
