Had a long day today. Got home and found my wife and 80 something year old mother-in-law waiting for me and thought it was going to be a longer evening. My wife says take your dinner to the bedroom, I've got a football movie for you....Outstanding I thought, then I saw what it was. "Goal!!! The Dream Begins" Oh my...what a bunch of codswallop! Bloody Disneyland meets the 'Toon.
A young illegal Mexican from LA goes to Newcastle England (Had to put that in so you yanks would know where I mean :)) to seek fame and fortune playing for the "Toon. With all his trials and tribulations along the way.
The climax of the movie is the 'Toon playing Liverpool in the last game of the season to get into the final four.
I mean talk about fairytails and think about really suspending disbelief and you have it.
Well, I like a good fairytail and I can suspend disbelief with the best, I really enjoyed it....It was still shite ....but enjoyable shite...!
All star Liverpool and Newcastle cast with Cameos from Raul, Zizu and Becks.

Just been watching 2 hours of blood, snot and shite being kicked out of a bunch of soft twats in "Green Street Hooligans"
Got to admit it was an entertaining flick. Just wish a few more of them had been killed off in real life for what they did to my game, my sport, my life........Bastards!

I liked it for being able to emotionally engage you whilst trying to explain the social reasons behind hooliganism. But I have got to wonder how sadly sensationalized it is, and I'm a bit upset by how it glorifies being a ignorant thug.
I can relate to the idea that experiences with life, death and violence help a person grow and ultimately reflect on their own life and wish that the movie had worked in a little more than just some narrative in at the end to compound that principle.
In the end though, I think it did a good job of explaining the whole "fighting as a means to learn more about yourself" cliche better and more realistically than a movie like Fight Club.

I found it hard to engage on a lot of levels. Maybe I remembered the pub camaraderie and football matches from my formative years until these yobs took it over the top. I loved the way they had to show how it wasn't just blue collar 'low lives' like my old bunch but Airline pilots, teachers and those of other professions.
The female lead was pretty unengaging, she knew how to shed tears but one didn't feel anything for her.
The movie held me though, until the last fight, the predictable climax, by then I was wondering if I was missing a DIY show on TV.....
A bit of usless trivia: Swift coined the word 'Yob' in "Gulliver's Travels" for a young troublemaker. It's actually 'boy' spelt backwards. The British media, the "journies" still use it daily

I suppose I just should of said engaging and dropped the "emotionally", it kept me entertained.

Saw the "Proposition" the other night. A sort of Peckinparish Ozzie 'western' with a "High Noon" storyline. Enough blood and guts to satisfy the average sadist.
A slow moving but compelling movie, punctuated with unexpect (and expected) moments of savage violence. Not one I'd share with my wife.....well, she wouldn't have stayed anyway...!
Review: http://www.infilm.com.au/reviews/theproposition.htm
Warning, tells most of the story line.

Try The Departed, Scorsese meets Irish gangs in Boston. Name actors all acting well, good script that catches Southie language and ethos closely, and as always with Scorsese excellent music choices.

Also, Flags of Our Fathers. Thoughtful, non-heroic war movie.
Finally, The USA versus John Lennon. Good documentary -- memory jogger for those who were there, and a valuable history lesson for those who only know the Mop Top lads from oldies radio.

Pretty rubbish film really. Only saw it recently, and I wasn't impressed. Too melodramatic, romantic notions of what hooliganism is all about, and a really poor ending. I was almost howling with laughter at the end.
Football factory was a lot better IMO.

"The Departed" We watched the original Chinese flick last year "Infernal Affairs" which was excellent. When I heard they were doing a Hollywood version I cringed at the thought. Especially DeCrappio playing the 'hard case' (Got to have a cigarette in your mouth to act hard!)
Who knows, seeing it's on your recomendation I may have to watch it when it comes on NetFlix... :)
I believe we have USA vs JL on order. Haven't spoken to john since '62 and I hope it will be a while before I talk to him again.

Football Factory was even father over the top. Just in the opposite direction.

My wife......bless her little cotton socks, ordered....and we watched "Guys and Balls" tonight.

A German movie about an oddball Fusball team playing their rivals...!!!
It was fun..If you don't feel threatened by it. It did win the Audience award in the Philadelphia International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.
The bad guy looked a lot like Michael Ballack.

Don't know about the rest of you, but I cannot wait for the Borat film. It's going to be hysterical.
A quick list of the year's best that you can catch either in theaters or on dvd:
Flight 93 - admittedly, not everyone might be ready for this, but once you feel comfortable, you'll probably never see a better docu-drama in your life.
The Departed - as if you needed any more convincing...
Thank You For Smoking - Nick Naylor is one of the greatest anti-heroes in
American history.
Little Miss Sunshine - Well-rounded road comedy. Gifted performances from the cast actually make these otherwise one-dimensional characters incredibly real. It's hilarious, too.
Brick - once you embrace the noir dialogue, it's irresistable.
Just saw The Prestige last weekend. Well executed, great characters and performances. It's good -- very good -- but not great. Definitely worth seeing, though.

Just rented Goal The Dream Begins with my brother. The movie wasn't that great. I mean, how many setbacks can one person come back from, it made it unrealistic. The soccer action scenes weren't too bad, I'm guessing as good as they could do. I will see the next two, but it just seems to unbelievable that the kid rose to the highest level of soccer in months and from what the previews of the other two movies it looks like he's a world superstar in two-three years. Seems kind of strange.

Have you seen some of the players that have played for Newcastle over the past few years? I think it is completely plausible! ;)
