Despite what the critics say, I really enjoyed V for Vendetta. That's what this thread is about...Screw the critics.

When you see some of these people pontificating on TV you think to yourself (or in my case out aloud to my suffering wife:) ) Why would this guy think that I would be interested in anything he said or valued.

It does tend to add up dunnitt? I guess if I was in SFO I'd probably get out more, I like that town!

It's nearly impossible to just 'meet for a pint' and not spend at least $40. Cabs, tip, bite of food on the way home, etc, etc. Plus, most places only take cash, so you end up taking out $60 or $80, which burns a hole much quicker than just doing the exact amount you need on the debit card.

I watched a movie last weekend that should be required viewing for all Americans entitled, The Revolution Will Not Be Televised. I don't want to give anything away. It really needs to be seen to be believed.

I saw it at SxSW a few years ago. Definitely an interesting film and amazing in the fact that their timing was impeccable. I would say, however, that it's pretty much propaganda. Their championing of Hugo Chavez is almost to the point of fanatical. I do agree that the events surrounding Chavez's coup were dispicable, but to paint Chavez as nothing but a compassionate, caring, man-of-the-people is a tad bit inaccurate. He's responsible for the deaths of many, many people.

Still worth a viewing, however. Just make sure you take it with a grapefruit-sized grain of salt.

Like listening to Gordon St. Rachan:D
Gordon "after you've seen the translation" has wonderfull quotes...
Here:

Southampton manager Gordon Strachan on Wayne Rooney
Its an incredible rise to stardom. At 17 you're more likely to get a
call from Michael Jackson than Sven Goran Eriksson.

Reporter: Gordon, Do you think James Beattie deserves to be in the
England squad?
Strachan: I dont care, I'm Scottish

Reporter: "Gordon, can we have a quick word please?"
Strachan: "Velocity" [walks off]

Reporter: Welcome to Southampton Football Club. Do you think you are
the right man to turn things around?
Strachan: No. I was asked if I thought I was the right man for the job
and I said, "No, I think they should have got George Graham because
I'm useless."

Reporter: Is that your best start to a season?
Strachan: Well I've still got a job so it's far better than the
Coventry one, that's for sure.

Reporter: Are you getting where you want to be with this team?
Strachan: We're not doing bad. What do you expect us to be like? We
were eighth in the league last year, in the cup final and we got into
Europe. I don't know where you expect me to get to. Do you expect us
to win the Champions League?

Reporter: Gordon, you must be delighted with that result?
Strachan: You're spot on! You can read me like a book.

Strachan: I've got more important things to think about. I've got a
yogurt to finish by today, the expiry date is today. That can be my
priority rather than Agustin Delgado.

Reporter: This might sound like a daft question, but you'll be happy
to get your first win under your belt, won't you?
Strachan: You're right. It is a daft question. I'm not even going to
bother answering that one. It is a daft question, you're spot on there.

Reporter: Bang, there goes your unbeaten run. Can you take it?
Strachan: No, I'm just going to crumble like a wreck. I'll go home,
become an alcoholic and maybe! jump of a bridge. Umm, I think I can
take it, yeah.

Reporter: There's no negative vibes or negative feelings here?
Strachan: Apart from yourself, we're all quite positive round here.
I'm going to whack you over the head with a big stick, down negative man,
down.

Reporter: where will Marion Pahars fit into the team line-up?
Strachan: Not telling you! It's a secret. >

Reporter: You don't take losing lightly, do you Gordon?
Strachan: I don't take stupid comments lightly either.

Reporter: So, Gordon, in what areas do you think Middlesbrough were
better than you today?
Strachan: What areas? Mainly that big green one out there....

Ther's only one Gordon Strachan...! :)

The other nights fare was "Saint Ralph" a Canadian film about a schoolboy and his reasons for running the Boston Marathon in the 1940's.

I saw this last night. Pretty funny in an honest way, serious without being too heavy-handed.

Saw Inside Man last night with my wife. Was probably the best Spike Lee movie I've seen in a while. Granted, he didn't write it. that may be why.

Thank you for smoking was good, but Cache was amazing.

Just seen Everthing is Illuminated, very good, not what I was expecting some dark comedy and some very serious stuff.

A young American Jewish man begins an exhausting quest -- aided by a naïve Ukranian translator -- to find the righteous gentile woman who saved his grandfather when his small Ukranian village (along with most of the populace) was obliterated during the Nazi invasion of Russia in 1941. Stars Elijah Wood, Eugene Hutz and Boris Leskin. Liev Schreiber directs. Based on the novel by Jonathan Safran Foer

An offbeat presentation that really sneaks up on you.
Good enough that I wanted to know more after the movie ended.

The Three burials of Melquiades Estrada
Acted in, with his first attempt at directing by Tommy Lee Jones. With a great Screenplay by Guillermo Arriaga.

This is one worth watching. I saw it a few days ago and it still comes to mind. Made you want to know what comes next or just what happened to the characters after the movie.
Macabre humour that makes you laugh in surprize.
I'll watch it again in a month or so and see how it goes then

Saw 2 movies this week worth a mention.
"Little Dieter needs to fly" Really good bio of a guy Dieter Dengler, who spends his life wanting to be a pilot and is shot down in shot down in Vietnam.
And
"Murderball" Murderball, now known as Quad Rugby. Focuses on the US/Canada rivalry in this 'brutal' Olympic sport of rugby for paraplegics who ride their wheelchairs like chariots.

Oh and one just to get you going. "Why we Fight" or what the hell are we doing in Iraq, worth watching but take your beta blocker for blood pressure first.

Saw a touching movie the other night "Bonjour Monsieur Shlomi"
http://www.strandreleasing.com/images/shlomi.gif The coming of age of a special boy in Israel. Just that it takes him and his family a while to realize he is special.
Cute young thing who plays Rona, his girl friend.

and then I read what "Real" Israeli's are like in the Maccabi Haifa thread...

I recently watched "The Battle of Algiers". I was curious about it b/c of the whole Zidane headbutting incident; if the accounts of him using a slur describing Zidane's mother as one of the female Algerian terrorists are true, then it's a pretty low insult.

The film was great. Very relevant today. Highly recommended.

The film was great. Very relevant today. Highly recommended.I spent a short time in France during this period in time. Saw the tanks outside Paris because of the fear of the Foreign Legion being used by the generals against the Government.

I'll have to take a look at it.

It also fits with the movie we watched the other night. "V for Vendetta" Better than I thought it was going to be. I liked it and it's comic book style. I might have to get it again in a short while to take another look.

The way the world is going at the moment with all the right wing war mongering politics and the use of the military to suport the industrial war machine. Giving rise to the fundamental religious nuts butting heads, with some them hailing the coming of Armageddon, the movie seemed pretty timely.
