Your right on that count. They did lead into the harder, nonmetal sound of the early 90's. But I won't accept that they didn't lead to this punk-turn emo-turn shit now. They influenced... say Green Day.. then these garage bands pop up playing Green Day and eventually they go corporate... Its a big vicious circle.
My original point was that the Clash are not more important than the Beatles. I think we all agree on that. And then there's the more 'important' versus more 'influencial' point.

I agree with you on that. The Beatles pretty much shaped rock music into everything it is today.

I personally think Rock is going downhill. People are running out of ideas. Hip Hop may or may not be the way forward. But Electronic music is. There is just too much a talented guy who puts there mind to it can do with it. No limitations to the physical person.
Admittedly, its not as amazing or heroic or whatever, but still damn good music.

I never did understand why The Beach Boys are considered so influential. Some people even put them as high as The Beatles. I don't rate The Beach Boys at all.

The Beatles are the most influential force in Music since Mozart.
And that so called cycle is part of music, a decade worth of recycled pop and underground music eventually led to Nirvana's sound which led to some crap today which in turn will lead to something else great in the future. The same can be said for other acts over the years, and that's just how it is.

Brian Wilson is one of the best songwriters of all time, and no one harmonized like the beach boys, but I wouldn't go as far as saying they are better than the beatles.

I don't rate them as anything amazing just good pop music I guess.
edit: what I mean is that, like SM said, they are good at what they did, but not that important TBH
edit edit: great at what they did

good to see a 17 year old being with this mindset, you come to NYC and you'll see teens dressing in Misfits, the clash shirts but not knowing who the hell they were or what they did.
I've been to NYC and I must say that in terms of what your saying Toronto is very much like that as well. I see way to many people wearing shirts that say "The Beatles" on them. I can guarantee you that at least 75% of those people would only be able to name a handful of songs by them. And I also see far too many emo ********ing kids who like shit emo bands like Taking Back Sunday and Fall Out Boy.

emo has got to be the worst fashion trend too. I swear to you, my school is full of these asswipes, and there's nothing more that I like to do than punch each of their skulls in everytime I see their boxed in glasses, their tight retro shirts with their belly showing, their piercing, and their ridiculous flop of hair hanging down their mugs.

Um, even if you're not the biggest fan of the Beatles per se, there is no way to deny their influence on music in the 20th century. First band to use four-track mixing, first band to develop what would become hard rock/metal, only musical act to hold all of the top five US singles spots at once, early pioneers of the electronic sound... I'm sure there's more, but that's off the top of my head. And I don't even consider myself to be that big a fan.
The Clash are up there with the big names, and you can't blame them for crappy punk bands any more than you can The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, or The Who. But its impossible to ignore the influence The Beatles had on the transformation of music as we know it.

I don't rate The Beach Boys at all.I recognize that they were influential in their moment, but for me the problem is they are so unbelievably lame now. Singing Surfing USA at the freakin superbowl, making little surfing hand-gestures, older and cheesier than my great grandfather. Ugh, it's just a shame.
Having said that, they were great in their moment, their harmonies are (were) amazing, and "God Only Knows" is one of the best songs ever, imo. Oh, and Brian Williams is still making great music.

dude dont get me wrong, im just not a big beatles fan. There is no point denying them being one of the biggest bands ever. I just happen to like the clash better.
Gutted I originally missed this debate, as I would have been straight in defending you. :)

Lots of violent impulses on this thread. Let's all listen to some mellow music now, um-kay?
