Just reading about Pesch, and Bunbury's name came to mind right away. I think he was the most talented Canadian Striker ever so far, it's too bad he didn't seem to play that often when he was at his best while he played for Maritimo. when he did play for us, he was pretty darn good as well, the anti-Pesch IMO. Just wondering what others thought of the man who was so respected in portugal, he was called by just Alex, sort of a Brazilian style thing. I do also remember him being rumoured to some big clubs in europe during his prime years with Maritimo, but he chose to stay with the Portuguese squad, mostly because of his wife (she was Portuguese I think) if memory serves correct.

you know, I actually liked Bunbury much more than Pesch.

Pesch seemed like a guy who woudl try soo hard, butu never get it done, while bunbury seemed more confident, and wasn't he bigger as well?

I rememebr being very disappointed when he was left off Team canada.

Didn't he finish with Kansas City in the MLS in 2000?

Yeah, he played part of a seaon with KC and retired after picking up an injury. He was only 33 or 34 at the time.

Holger left him off the squad and never called to explain the situation with Bunbury which left him bitter.

Bunbury was very good, and now he's son Teal Bunbury is in our youth program and I think he scored a goal in a friendly against New Zealand last fall.

I'm glad that Holger is gone then. Like we couldn't use the talents of a Bunbury at striker during his reign as coach.

I think Bunbury also was PO'ed because when he signed with KC nobody from soccer Canada called to congratulate him. Ya, as big league and egotistical as it sounds I guess its common practise to do this. Its a way of saying "we're still aware of you and following your development". Bunbury went public to the globe and mail and soccer Canada which needed bad news about as much as a kick in the shins. Holger never really called him after that.
This all lead to Bunbury giving one of the greatest and most appropriate quotes on Canadian soccer ever. They had found some guy who turned out had a Canadian mother playing in (insert some European country here) and when they realized he could qualify as a Canadian invited him to camp. Well it was the mans first trip to Canada since he was 5 years old. Bunbury on hearing this said about the guy............. "if you've got talent we'll find a spot for you on the roster"

His injury was actually picked up near the end of his time in Portugal and it never really totally healed which is why he didn't play for Canada that summer.

I recall that Alex made a super human effort to get to Edmonton but was unable to play.

He was definitely a special player and he may be overlooked by some but for those of us who really did follow his career and his success, we know how good he really was.
