15 of the 17 WC finals had groups in the first stage. The WC winner have come from the following groups: A: 5/15 (1966,74,78,82,86)
B: 2/15 (1954,94)
C: 5/15 (1930,62,70,98,2002)
D: 3/15 (1950,58,90)
E: 0/6
F: 0/6
G: 0/2
H: 0/2
If you find this meaningful , go bet on Germany, Argentina or Netherlands.
In 1978 the first three places were occupied by teams that finished second the group stage. No other final featured two second place teams. If West Germany had beaten Italy (the game ended 0:0), the top four teams would have finished second in the group stage.
Since 1954, only twice the semi finals featured only group winners:
1966, they finished A1, B1, C1, D1
1958, they finished D1, C1, B1, A1
Only twice did the final featured teams which played in the group stage:
1962, Brazil beat Czechoslovakia 3:1; the group stage game ended 0:0.
1954, West Germany beat Hungary 3:2 after losing 8:3 in the group stage.
