They don't have the required money and it would be a complete waste seeing as they were going to get relegated regardless.

And I thought in August that Sunderlund would be the only promoted club to stay up. Shows what I know.
Yeah, in this transfer window it seems pointless. They might as well just sell all of their good players now and play their reserves, to save money (hell why not?!)

I was the exact opposite. Wigan had the backing to bring in players and hopefully stay up. The same with West Ham, but they had experienced players. Now consider Sunderland and their idiot of a manager...

Sunderland ditched the players who won them promotion and traded them for a bunch of no-hopers .They offloaded guys like marcus stewart ,sean thornton ,etc.. and bought in some real crap .I guess they just wanted to take the premiership money and run .Not be bothered about getting relegated .

The trouble all started when Stead put his faith in Stead scoring enough goals to keep them in the league. :D

I blame their crap stadium. Their fans sit about 10 meters from the pitch and it is only about half full. When does a team do well in front of a half empty stadium?

if sunderland signed buffon, cafu, terry, nesta, zambrotta, lampard, gerrard, kaka, ronaldinho, shevchenko, rooney, henry, or any1 else they still wouldn't stay up

I blame ticket prices. Would you pay £30/£40 to watch that? Considering that the north-east isn't exactly rolling in cash you can't blame the fans for staying away.
But they charged £10 for adults, £5 for kids when Arsenal came to play in the Carling Cup and filled it. Hmmmmm. There's a lesson there somewhere...

its not going to be a suprise to me if they get relegated... what they should have done was look for players in Greece or Portugal to play on their team... not expensive players to buy and they are usually worth the money... but now it is too late into the season to buy new players... o well looks like they will go down a league and pray for a better year next year...

The simplest reason is probably the right one. They don't have all that much money to spend. Say what you want about West Ham, and Wigan but they are finacially secure, even thriving.

Hmmm, the lesson is an economic one. If my stadium holds 20 people and it sells out at £10 each, that gives me £200. But if I can still get 10 people to come and pay £30/£40 each, that gives me £300/400. The lesson there is it still makes financial sense to rape people's wallets, unfortunately.

It's fun to think that but they were living on borrowed time. There were plenty of years in the prem alone where Saints avoided relegation on the last day of the season. You can only play with fire like that so long before you get burnt.
I thought the rumors about Sunderland bringing in a new manager last month. I got the impression last year when they were in the fizzy pop the board was tickled pink at how they played without spending much money. They were in financial straights not too long ago. I think they realized last year they needed to stay on the straight and narrow, not spend now, and hope they can pop right back up. 2 years from now they should be in a much better position to spend to try to stay up.
