Servette is looking to transfer Alexander Frei, the third highet scorer in Europe during this season so far. Frei has been quited as saying that he would love to go to Borussia Mönchengladbach, but would go elsewhere. The Servette official whom the article quotes says that they are in contact with many teams, but no decisions have been made yet. But it seems very doubtful that Frei will be playing in the Stade de Geneve on its opening day in March.

It's official. Alex Frei will leave Servette and will sign with Rennes on Thursday...
Rennes is currently 15th in the French league. Frei's contract is until 2006.
This should be a good transfer for Alex. Rennes could be the perfect stepping stone for him to a bigger club.
Frei will be the 7th Swiss playing in France. The others are:
- Müller (Lyon)
- Celestini (Marseille)
- Lonfat (Sochaux)
- Grichting (Auxerre)
- Lumbamba (Troyes)
- Vega (Créteil)

It will be sad to see him go. If Servette wants to make a run at a UEFA spot, lets hope that someone steps up and picks up the huge slack. Any mention of the Transher fee?

Yeah, this sucks for Servette - but they do need the money. The transfer fee is estimated at about 2 mio CHF. Mönchengladbach was also interested, but wanted to loan him out first.

Anyone know if Frei is Swiss-German or Swiss-Romand? Mabye language also played a role in his decision to Rennes over Germany. A side note Rennes just sold a defender to Valencia for 5 million Euros. I imagine some of that money went to get Frei.
From todays edition of Le Matin of Geneva, it seems that Frei wanted to go, and when the offer for Rennes was given, Servette took it. I wish him luck in France.

Frei scores his first goal for Rennes in a 3-0 victory over Libourne in the French Cup. Frei scored the first goal of the game.

He's Swiss-German (from Basel I believe.)
It's real nice to see him take the momentum he got with the nats to France. I wish him the best for the upcoming league games...
