Now that we've got a great soccer-specific name for our team, check out this poll to vote on the name for Toronto's expansion team (2007). Their list is much much better than the list we were given - hope they end up with a good one, too.

Here's the text of their poll:

Which of the following names do you like best for Toronto's new Major League soccer franchise?

Toronto Athletic
Toronto United
Sparta Toronto
Athletico Toronto
A.C. Toronto
Toronto Rovers

and here's the link to it (bottom of page):
http://www.sportsnet.ca/soccer/index.jsp

Looks like we're not the only ones who liked "Rovers" as a nickname.

I voted for Toronto Athletic which looks like it's in 2nd place behind Toronto United

I've also read that Toronto City is pretty popular on the BigSoccer boards.

This poll doesn't look like it's an official MLS poll, so it may not carry much weight, but I guess you never know.

I personally don't want another United in MLS. Even though its used for a few teams in England, I like having teams with their own Identity in each league.

Toronto Athletic works best for me.

I second that and Athletic is the best of the bunch, IMO.

If Toronto gets a team does that mean DeRosario will want to leave 1836 to go to Canada?

I went with Toronto Athletic. I don't mind multiple United's. Athletic just grabbed my attention.

Who's a Rover, and why? It's a dog's name, and a name for a team that strays or moves all over the place or for players who have wanderlust and wandering eyes...

...but I stray from the point. I must be a rover.

What date could they pick that would piss off the Quebecois? It would help take the heat off us. :)

Yeah...I was actually hoping they'd go for Houston Athletic as a choice, as well as Apollo SC Houston...but 1836 was right up there with both of those in my book so I'm happy - as I think most of us are.

I have the 1836 logo as my desktop wallpaper and everytime I glance at it, it grabs my attention and I like it more and more each time.

I'm going to vote for Toronto Athletic.

I wante Athletico Houston for us :( or INTER Houston for us :( Since Houston is an international city. INTER would have been more proper. But I still like 1836. Don't get me wrong.

Hey There,

Sportsnet ran this unofficial poll about two weeks ago. In this group Athletic was my choice!

They left out two names that are very popular.

Toronto Blizzard (after the NASL blizzard) not my choice. There appears to be a large swell of support coming for....

:D TORONTO CITY SOCCER CLUB:D

This name is traditional and unoffensive and lends itself well to the largest city in Canada!!

What dya think?

Toronto will have a team and I'd bet my season ticket that DeRo will be playing for them in their inagural season. I hope I'm wrong but I'm sure MLS will make it happen. OK, I wouldn't actually bet my season ticket but I almost would...

As for the name, I voted for Toronto Athletic but none of the names really grabbed me. I like the idea of maybe Toronto Sporting Club but referring to it merely as TSC (or Toronto Soccer Club). I do like traditional names but I fear we're going to get to the point where we'll be a 20 team league with a Real Salt Lake, DC United, Sparta Milwaukee, Athletico Toronto, Philadelphia Leverkusen, Rochester Rovers, etc. It could start to get a little ridiculous.

I'd like to say that I had no idea this was posted before my previous post...great minds think alike. Needless to say, I like it.

Yeah, Toronto City SC works for me - I still like Toronto Athletic better, though. But it's not our city or our team. We've got our name. Good luck getting the name you all want in Toronto!

The nickname being...Tor-City (pun off Man-City :D ), or just TSC. Either way, I love it.

I think there are certain "borrowed" naming conventions that will work and some that won't. "ReAL" is stretching it a bit, I think, mostly because it's not an American term. Even "FC" skates the line simply because we call it soccer here.

Things like City, Athletic, AC (Athletic Club), SC (Soccer Club), Sporting, Olympic (and some others) work because they can be found in typical American vocabulary.

Whereas names like Spartak, Sparta, Athletico, Athletique, Olympique, etc. are clearly language-specific terms (as is Real) that have English counterparts.

Hopefully once the number of teams starts growing, having 2 "United" teams won't seem like such a big deal and we can continue using the more simple, common name modifiers (United, SC/AC/FC) for more than one team so it doesn't get out of hand like that, where we have one of everything.

I mean...nobody accuses Newcastle United of being unoriginal because they have part of the same name as Manchester United anymore than people accuse NFL teams of being unoriginal because they're all plural mascot-type names.

And there are names in the MLS that aren't internationally influenced that I think are fine as is: Chicago Fire, New England Revolution (Revs), Columbus Crew, MetroStars.

Now I wouldn't mind seeing name changes for the Colorado Rapids, LA Galaxy, & Kansas City Wizards, though.

So who know how it will go, or if there will be backlash against internationally-inspired club names or not - but for right now I'm loving it. Better Real Salt Lake than the Salt Lake Seals or something hideous like that.

Jeez I can ramble on can't I? Sorry.

The difference between the American "United" and the English "United" is that the latter is a result of two football clubs "uniting." The same can't be said for the former, which results in the name souding a bit forced (though thanks to rEal, some of that criticism has been redirected). Unless two Toronto teams unite to form a single team, I'd be opposed to naming the club Toronto United.

"Athletic" and "Olympique" (which has yet to be suggested) falls into the same pitfalls simply because the team isn't an athletic club that involves itself (at least initially) in different sports like many of the English and French teams that carry the moniker. The team to be named here is a soccer team, and nothing more.

In a nutshell, I'm all for Toronto City Soccer Club. It has a classy ring to it.
