I'd like to see him buy the TV rights, but it will take more than that to fix the open cup. The way USSF schedules and promotes the games, the way they sell tickets, all the things that go into packaging that tournament are all wrong. They'd be better off if they turned the whole thing over to AEG or MLS or someone who knows something about how to produce and market pro sports.

Even though it's always in the United States, the Gold Cup is not run by USSF.
It's a CONCACAF event. They run it and you can - and should - blame them for how poorly the event is marketed, advertised, televised and for how pooorly tickets are sold.

What does the open cup have to do with the Gold Cup and World Cup qualifying games?

I read the story (can't find the link now) and running it through Babelfish, it basically says that CONCACAF knows this is a good deal, but Chuck Blazer might let his big ego get in the way.
It also said that AEG is basically pissed at Champions World (Stillitano's group) and wants to take control of marketing a lot of properties. All the info came from an anonymous source.
I see this as the first baby steps of SUM if it is true. While games might not end up on ESPN, I can only wonder if SUM is looking at getting its meathooks into some things to make a soccer channel more viable. Imagine if they had the US rights to all CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers.

I would assume those rights would be English Language Rights. I can't see it being that valuable a property as nearly every WCQ is broadcast in Spanish to 90% of the target market.

can i get a clarification?
is uncle phil trying to get the TV rights to the gold cup or the rights to the whole tournament (tv rights included)?
and is he trying to get the TV rights to the US qualifiers, or the TV rights to ALL the WCQs?
i'm just a tad confused.
forgive me. only 2 hours sleep last night.

From my limited spanish this sounds like one of the most interesting and telling articles to come out in a long time...and its clear that a number of groups are starting to see the US Soccer market as very valuable...it will be interesting to see how all of this plays out over the next decade. When you realize that NBC now owns Telemundo you can see some big time media companies getting involved in the future....this could be interesting. Also the rivalry between SUM and Champions World could lead to both interesting battles and problems in the future.
