City Step Up Striker Search

Manchester City will intensify their efforts to land Georgios Samaras from Heerenveen following the shock departure of Robbie Fowler.

The veteran striker's stunning return to Liverpool has left a gaping hole in City's striking options but also generated around £1million in saved income.

That cash will now be used to try to prise Samaras away from the Dutch club after the 20-year-old decided to go on strike rather than return to training after the Dutch FA ruled Heerenveen's £9million asking price was not too high.

Having previously offered only £3million for the highly-rated Greek striker, City's revised bid will still be some way short of Heerenveen's valuation.

However, Blues officials hope they will buckle knowing the transfer window shuts on Tuesday.

Although Fowler made just four substitute appearances in the Barclays Premiership this term, many City fans are genuinely sad to see the player Kevin Keegan paid £6million for three years ago leave Eastlands.

Yet it would also be true to say Fowler did not fit into the mould Blues boss Stuart Pearce prefers and there was next to no chance of his £35,000-a-week contract being renewed at the end of the season despite his recent hat-trick against Scunthorpe.

"Liverpool are Robbie's dream club and he wanted to leave and rejoin them," Pearce told the club's website, www.mcfc.co.uk.

"If I refused him this opportunity of fulfilling his ambition, it would not be good for him or Manchester City.

"We wish him well for the future and thank him for his efforts

But there are other news sources which show that Man City actually put forward a £5.8 million bid in for the Greek striker and Heerenveen will settle for £7 million so if they are true then we could end up landing Samaras after all.

Sorry, it's in Dutch but the gist is that you guys only pay 7.5m Euro. What a steal.

City agree deal for Samaras
By Andy Clarke - Created on 28 Jan 2006

Manchester City are set to sign Georgios Samaras from Heerenveen after agreeing a fee with the Dutch club.

The 20-year-old Greek striker has been Stuart Pearce's chief transfer target during the January window and the City boss looks to have finally landed his man, with the fee believed to be around £6million.

Robbie Fowler's move to Liverpool on Friday helped to free up the funds for a renewed offer for Samaras after City's initial offer of £3million was rebuffed.

Samaras took Heerenveen to a tribunal late last week in an unsuccessful attempt to force them to lower their asking price of £9million, which he believed to be unfair and would prevent him from furthering his career.

However, the Eredivisie club have agreed a compromise deal with City after the player refused to return to training on Friday.

Club president Riemer van der Velde told Sky Sports News that City are getting the best young striker in Holland.

"It was a hard deal because it was very difficult to come to an agreement with the club of Manchester," van der Velde told Sky Sports News.

"He thinks it would not work any longer with our club so we made contact with City and it's for the best that we did that.

"He's a big player, the best in Holland at his age.

"He's big, he's very strong, he's a good header of the ball and he is a good technical footballer.

"He has a good character and I think he will be a very big player in the future for City."

The Greek Under-21 international will complete his move to Eastlands on Monday, subject to a medical and the successful negotiation of personal terms.

I'm not that bothered about Fowler leaving now :D :) Good signing Pearce! Hopefully we can sign perhaps a midfielder and that Matthew Mills from Southampton.

There hasn't been anymore transfers yet but I was wondering, do you think signing Samaras was the best player to buy for £6m? I think its a good signing, but often highly-rated players come to the Premiership and they underperform, but I'm sure Samaras will do a good job. Last day of transfer window tomorrow so hopefully we can bring in at least another player.
