Anyone got any opinions on why certain countrys fans like Eng, Holland, Irish & Arg travel in huge numbers )the English will cross continents in their 1000's to watch pointless friendlies!) while Italy, Spain & many others just don't seem to have the same culture of away travel. The World Cup was notable for the amazing support from English & Irish fans & the tiny numbers from Spain, Italy & Germany. THe same thing can be seen in the Champions League & UEFA cup, illustrated by 7,000 Ipswich Town fans flying to Russia to watch a UEFA cup game against Lokomotiv Moscow last year. How many Barca, Inter or Porto fans do you see at Old Trafford or Highbury? THe Dutch seem to be a notable exception

My own club isn't that big when it comes to travelling. When the team goes far we can get 10.000 to a European (CL) away match, but... that's all those glory supporters that suddenly like to travel when we get far.
In general we take 700-2000 to European away matches. feyenoord are bigger when it comes to travelling. Utrecht are a bit bigger too (but that's also a bit of a succes story IMO).

It seems that German fans travel in decent numbers but not as much as English fans.

Because most Euro nations arent that Large and traveling around Europe is pretty easy. Going from London to Paris is probably like traveling from New York to DC give or take. Even when going to extreme sides of Europe its no different then going from one side of the US to the other, if not less.

Yeah but we still get thousands upon thousands of fans traveling to places like japan and south korea for world cups and even the friendlies we had over there before the world cup were well attended.

In those cases I would say its a combo of pre planned vacations, people that actually live in those locations and a good group of hardcores that travel. Why, because they like soccer.

There were certainly more US Fans than Portugal Fans at the WC for whatver that's worth. I know, not much, but I certainly expected a lot more Portugese fans.

The average wage in the US is higher than in Portugal, therefore so is disposable income. Portuguese fans may also have been watching their respective teams for an entire season prior to the WC, something US fans don't have to contend with.

Fine, but that doesn't go any way to explain why Spain (and others given in the initial example) bring proportionately few fans to European away matches.

pull your bottom lip over your head and swallow. I wasn't aware that those americans i heard singing throughout the whole game were "dimplomats living in asia who figured they might as well go see the wc." I don't know the exact numbers but there were a crapload of U.S. fans that made the trip over. Probably somewhere in the couple thousands, which is good for us.

I'd hardly say that, take a look at your average fan, most work in a dead end job with kids to feed and a Mrs to keep happy. My old man don't work and he travels to England matches away from home all the time.
