Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck has revealed the club are to announce further huge financial losses on Friday.

The club bankrolled by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich announced a record pre-tax loss of £88million 12 months ago and the figures for the past year will again show a 'significant' deficit.

Keep it in perspective, Roman is one of the richest men in the world. His non-soccer business makes up for this loss as a drop in the bucket. Nothing is going to change for a good while, gents.

Premiership champions Chelsea have reported record losses of £140 million for last year.

A toy team? Nooooooo, of course not.

Apparently they "publicly" lost 140 million last year though the articles say that not all income was included. That's about 230 million in two seasons but they expect to break even by 2009/2010 so no worries. If they lost 140 million last year, they'll probably only lose 100 milion in 2006, 75 million in 2007, 50 million in 2008, 25 million in 2009, and break even in 2010. Roughly half a billion pounds - almost $900 million...

Do you believe them? I don't... There's a looooonnng history of sports teams owners floating out bogus numbers to obfuscate how much they're really making. They can't have the players knowing how much the owners are really making lol

Arsene Wenger has outlined his belief that clubs should be restricted to spending within their natural limits, after Chelsea posted a mammoth loss of £140 million for last year.

he's spot on. It's precisely why they'll never be respected.

It's amazing that I have the ability to predict their arguments before it hapopens.... Oh wait it's the only argument any of those asshats have...

exactly... they can point all kinds of fingers to what other clubs have done, but quite frankly no one has come even close to this kind of thing... I mean... Barca have worked long and hard at several sports to amass 140M in debt... chelsea losing that in one season is laughable, but on the back of an 88M loss a season before its a bit more than obscene.

What's more, its not football... to have some kind of comparison you'd have to have a national team with no boundaries, so that they could rightly claim the rights to Shevchenko, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Gerrard, Rio, Terry, Cole and Van Nistelrooy... how would that be fair to other countries that have boundaries and can't possibly hope to have access to that talent.

Chelsea's exploits so far have had almost nothing to do with football, but rather luck because nothing's stopping Bill Gates from making Sunderland into something similar and the only thing that would seperate them from the rest of the league is luck. Not shrewd purchases, great youth teams or players performing better than previously thought possible, or excellent coaching.

It's quite odd to hear Chelsea officials talk about their 'business plan' and making profits, when considering their numbers of the last two years.
In a way it's almost good news for rivals. Instead of giving the impression that they're intent on wasting away as much cash as possible to buy trophies, they're saying that they have a business plan which is currently not looking so hot.

You could argue that Real Madrid's squad of 2002/2003 was arguably the most embarassment of riches in history but how did they fair? Money alone does not promise titles but it sure does make it easier to win them!

I have to say that Abramovich did the right thing by bringing in Mourinho. Jose is an amazing coach and, even if he were at Sunderland with their budget, he would achieve amazing results (amazing by their standards). What we're seeing is what happens when a great coach gets to make all the decisions and has the budget of his dreams...

What we are seeing hasn't happened in football before.. period.. teams don't just go out and get 22 players in their prime who are of the caliber that Chelsea has established... that Madrid team had precious little depth but still... they were able to lure such great stars because of a reputation they'd built up, however chelsea didn't have that, they just paid everyone a sh1tload more than they could make anywhere else. Not football...

I still don't know if I'd call Mourinho amazing. A very good coach? Sure. He certainly did well with Porto in Europe, and despite their diving through much of their run, in the end they had to score the goals and defend their own goal. But even looking at his budget, it was Ranieri who brought in most of the star players, and who nurtured a young John Terry and Frank Lampard to maturity. Mourinho may get the tactics right, but it helps to have the kind of depth he does at the same time.

Mourinho was the right coach to bring in, but he also happened to be the "flavor of the month" at just the right time. Also you can't compare Chelsea to Real Madrid. I don't think Real Madrid even try to pass themselves off as a football club most of the time--I tend to think of them more as a travelling circus sideshow. Real Madrid are essentially what Chelsea would be if the decisions were made by someone with a five-year-old's knowledge of tactics, i.e. "we have to score more goals than the other team".

that Madrid team had precious little depth...Definitely it was Ranieri who brought in most of the star players, and who nurtured a young John Terry and Frank Lampard to maturity.Who would qualify as the star players that Ranieri brought in? Terry and Lampard, sure, but I don't know enough about Chelsea history to really talk about it. I'd say that Makelele, Cech, Drogba and Robben are certain stars with Duff, Essien, Crespo in the sort-of stars. All of the previous but Crespo were bought by Mourinho, no? Or was Duff brought in by Ranieri? I can't remember
