I don't know if you guys are aware of Arctic Monkeys yet but in the UK they are widely predicted to be the biggest new band of the year. They have mainly become popular over the past 6 months through word of mouth and the fact that they put a huge amount of demo's on the internet but their debut album is released over here in about 2 weeks time and according to the music media could well be one of the biggest/fastest selling debut albums of all time.
If you are having a hunt on the internet for music check them out, in particular the songs 'mardy bum', 'a certain romance' and 'when the sun goes down'

It seems like once a year a good British ban blows up in the indie world and usually I hear about them here first.

They'll be touring the US in March.
I've got tickets to see them at Leeds Uni on the 1st of Feb. :)

You know they're good when I have them stuck in my head all the time, and not just one or two songs, but all of them. They are definitely the hottest thing out there right now. Too bad it will take Americans too long to find out about these guys from Sheffield.

Too long? Are they breaking up before they release their first album? :)

Us yanks are so behind the times. They'll hit here in spring and by spring they will be totally over in England.

And we were a year ahead of the UK on Arcade Fire. I think it's more a matter of where the band is from than the alertness of the fans in either place.

I <3 the arctic monkeys. I listen to the album at least once a day. I passed on a free ticket through work when they played the bowery ballroom last year because my brother was supposed to come into town....but he cancelled an hour before he was supposed to show up
'certain romance' and 'Bigger Boys and Stolen Sweethearts' are my phavorites. my pics for blowout bands this year are Arctic Monkeys, Matisyahu, Tapes 'n Tapes, and Levy.

The music snobs' latest group. Watch how they all drop this over-hyped band as soon as they sell more than 4 records, and 'plebs' like me listen to them. This time next year NME and the others will be calling them 'rank' 'average' and 'irritating'.

LOL
They are The Darkness MKII (not in sound but they're a one album band)
They're almost a novelty act, the singer's overtly northern accent will begin to grate before too long. Musically they've got nothing lasting about them. They're like mid-90s indie bands but with a much less polished sound.
There are a few other bands around at the moment who are supposedly 'the next big thing' but they'll have very limited appeal (Kaiser Chiefs, Franz Ferdinand etc)

I like the Rakes better but that 'Mardy Bum' song is pretty cool.

It's a comment against the 'build them up and knock them down' mentality. The hypocracy annoys me as well. The so-called experts over expose and overhype a band, and then complain about band x being overhyped and over exposed, and that people who weren't there when band x played to 3 mean and a dog in a pub are idiots for going along with the hype THEY created. The teletext on channel 4 is full of these elitist numpties.

I humbly disagree with you. Further, I rate them much higher than ^^^ 'Certain Romance' kicks every Kaiser Chiefs song's ass.
I also really like Art Brut.

Kaiser Chiefs are the ultimate novelty band. They are f***ing appaling yet the kids lap it up.
