Not a joke.

The websites will catch up with the story within the next hour or so.

:(

We are in trouble.

UNITED midfielder Paul Scholes has been ruled out for the rest of the season after doctors confirmed he was suffering a 'medical condition' in his right eye.

Either we recall Jones or bring in a new CM because we cannot cope without Scholes for the whole season. Incidentally...there is more to this story then just 'the season' his career is on the line, which is also a ********ing worry. :( gutted for Scholesy. I hope it doesn't end for him in this way!!

...This ********ing sucks.

I was really worried initially when the word on the length of his injury was "indefinite", but now my worst fears have come true. :(

Smith/Fletcher the rest of the season it is, unless we go out there to buy a new CM right now (which is long overdue anyway).

Horrible news indeed...not just for the team and fans but for Scholesy himself. Whether he's able to play again or not, I hope his eye condition goes away so he can lead a normal life. I really really hope he does not have to go out this way...

:( :( :(

It sounds worrying. Advising 3 months rest to someone with blurred vision makes it seem like they do not have a real solution ,and just hope it will go away over time. How is he supposed to rest his eyes? Stay in a darkened room?
It'll have to be Fletcher and Smith in CM for the rest of the season, although Smith is curently injured and Fletcher looks tired.
Could struggle to get second place now, but at least we beat Liverpool who will probably get it instead.

I said as much in the transfer thread... Ballack is looking really good right about now...

This sucks for Scholes, I hope he can come back for United, but we don't want to endanger his life after United by risking him. We have GOT to recall Jones or buy some quality.

What I am confused about is the amount of time Scholesy has been left to rest before they consulted a specialist. He has been sidelined for over 2 months now and they only sought specialist diagnosis a few days ago.

I mean if Ronaldo came to work one day and had grown to long pointy ears, hooves and grey fur all over his body would we have left it for two months to calm down before seeking specialist advice from a donkey sanctuary. Ney!

Sad news about Scholesy, will need to do some trading even if it is just a patch for the rest of the season.

Scholes was seen by the top specialist in Manchester a while ago. The club has sought a second (third and fourth) opinion of late because no one has a solution to the problem and even this '3months rest' thing is bollocks, but let's not get into that right now :(

Gutted for Scholesy. Here's to hoping this gets sorted out, not only for his playing career, but for his long-term health.

This is just another sad story. I hope for the sake of his well-being, or family that he gets well soon.

Aww damn, damn, damn, damn...[/what's happening]

First and foremost, hopefully this isn't something that affects his life outside of the game. Secondly, we all hope for a speedy recovery and return to action. Don't know what else there is to do at this point.

I got in about an hour ago, drenched to the bone with my car stuck out in the sticks in three feet of water from a flash flood. I logged on to relax a while before going to bed. I just read this post! :(

The soccer gods certainly have it in for Utd this season.

The very best of luck to you Paul. I sincerely hope this is indeed something that will clear up in a few months both for you personally and for us fans who would hate to see your career end like this. We need you back. Get well soon.

Well, the stories say "non-footballing" medical reasons. But, he had to come off on Dec 28th during a match, so I'm going to throw this bad news in with the year 2005 - for my own sanity's sake. :(

Well isn't that just fantastic? Right as we get cover for the best pure defender on the team (Heinze), our most talented defender (Rio) is hitting top form and one of the clubs most loved and indeed, important players (Solskjaer) is coming back from a 2.5 year layoff that almost ended his career... our most important midfielder goes down for the season, and may never play again. Add the absolute plethora of injuries we have had this season, and the media picking on us like you wouldn't believe unless you had seen it happen, our captain (and one of our best players ever, as well as perhaps them ost influential) going in... and our European exile (coupled with our record-setting debts), and you really could not have stacked the odds against us more by any means.

It is a credit to the players (not named Silvestre or O'Shea) and the club that we have beaten both of the other top-3 teams in the league this year and are picking up about 2pts/game, as well as being close to a cup final... but this is just horrible. I hope Scholes looks to Ole and is back to his best next year... or back at all :(.

well, he can pass and dribble... he's certainly got the tools to play AM, but he wouldn't be of much help to the other central midfielder.
