Bobby Robson has his “advisor” role with Eire now and he is probably too old anyways, but he might work as an interim England manager (working with McClaren et al) for the WC and for the next couple of years.

Otherwise, it really is foreign as none of the English managers have really proven themselves at club-level and/or the Euro stage.

That's the way I see it. I really think you need international experience at either club or national level to do the England job. None of the English candidates has any experience of Champions League football (sorry, I really don't think the UEFA Cup counts these days). Scolari or Hiddink would do fine for me. Or maybe Houllier. Just kidding.

I think Big Sam is tactically very much an English manager, and that might suit England. I also think the sophistication of international football could well be beyond him,

I had a very good laugh at that, you're just trying to wind me up aren't you? :D

Motivation is more important than all this Swedish tactical finesse (snigger).

Disagree really, England and English players have never really lacked for motivation – Terry, Rooney, Lampard, Gerrard, etc – these lads have oodles of motivation.

As a team/squad we need tactical finesse and I can't think of a present English manager who has that. If only Brian Clough were alive. . .

There will be monumental pressure for England to select an English manager (of which Big Sam would probably be the best choice).
Ah, Sam, yes we like Sam. He has good man-management skills. Tactics and strategies though, eh? “Right lads this is how we’re gonna beat Brazil. . .”

Just leaves me unconvinced.

Has he ever won a trophy btw?

The Celtic fans would crucify O'Neill if he managed England. Which is their issue, but O'Neill would have to think about that a bit.

O’Neil has not managed at the highest level and has only ever won trophies in Scotland. I mean Scottish fitba, come on, anyone who manages either Seltick/Hun should win at least a few trophies

England is doom

After all the hardwork, it is back to English coaches & the name being passed around around are jokes like Steve McClaren

The English media like to claim Sven do not bring passion to team, wait until coaches like Steve McClaren get done with it

You shouldn't be posting this kind of stuff with your username.

But the obvious shortcomings of the current English team are team spirit and motivation, surely. Didn't you watch England vs Brazil in 2002, or England vs Portugal in 2004? Of course you have loads of talent, and I don't think tactics are the main problem (although there's lots of room for improvement). Maybe I am overestimating this 'will to win' factor, probably cos I am German.

If you are looking for a good tactician, go for Hitzfeld (your Royal family are German ffs so why not the England manager - you know it makes sense).

He's managed in the premiership and has also won the League Cup with us a couple of times. OK, its not champions-league-winning stuff, but its still more experience than say Stuart Pearce has.

Yes true, and Pearce ruled himself out totally saying it would be embarrassing.

O'Neil is a good manager, merely an English/Spanish/Italian league title and a Euro trophy away from the job.

Would he also be willing to change his name?

Sure, if there's another war and he has a couple of decades of ruling England under his belt... Sir Otmar Heatfield, here we come.

Big Sam is a meat pie and veg man.

The FA are generally a chicken bernaise with roast artichokes and sautéed onions kinda place.

According to the internet the favourite is Steve Mcclaren.

Jesus wept. Oh well, I won't shed a tear if he leaves.

How about this guy though.

His post-match analysis/rant about the player going out to pick up a lovely bird had me in stitches. I would want England to lose, so I could hear his post match comments.

To put it in gentleman's terms if you've been out for a night and you're looking for a young lady and you pull one, some weeks they're good looking and some weeks they're not the best. Our performance today would have been not the best looking bird but at least we got her in the taxi. She weren't the best looking lady we ended up taking home but she was very pleasant and very nice, so thanks very much, let's have a coffee

That guy is a genius.

Sven ******** off. Let's have some fun for christ cakes...

For that reason, I suggest Brian Rix.

Great choice Ted, at least we'll be rolling in the aisles, what about Brian Kiddyfiddler? :)
