is it just me or does SirM not believe in ID because he is God? LOL, you knoweverything about everything but subjects in your major?
Guess what, I'm willing to bet that you can't appreciate what it is to be black, or black in America. If there's a class that helps provide that, I wouldn't be opposed to it, even if you think you know what its like because, trust me you don't (hell, I don't I was born and raised in Trinidad and its nothing compared to the US and as such at first I had no idea what it meant to be black in the US). Or if its about women, you should never pass up the opportunity to take in information on various subjects, it only makes you a more rounded person. Don't be fooled into thinking a 100 on the test means you know all there is to know on the subject. The test is what education is about... education is what education is all about and there's far more to learn than can be tested. Students who enter a class with the mindset to do well on tests almost never learn as much as those who intend to learn all they can - regardless of the test scores.
You are coming off like you know everything about everything and you aren't interested in anything but what you think is worthwhile to you and as such its a waste of your time - that's a pretty offensive mindset. I can see why you made the angry thread. You are going to be angry for a long time if you expect everything to be catered to you when clearly, since you know everything about everything you are the exception and not the rule.

You're wrong, this has nothing to do with me knowing what it's like to be black in America, I appreciate all the education I can get in every subject, however I receive nothing new in these classes. You probably think I'm a cocky white guy who hasn't experienced any hardships in life. Well that couldn't be further from the truth, I've been the minority all my life, everywhere I've lived, but I won't comment too much on that since its not relevant to the topic at hand.
You are also assuming that outside of class, I don't do any research, no studying or looking into things such as culture, science, etc. That's not true. It's just that none of the education I receive is anything new to me, it just goes into more detail but it's nothing that I'm not already aware of. If I want to go into details I can do research on my own, hence why I think these requirements are a waste of time and distraction from what I truly want to learn.

You have studied the history of the black American culture in depth on your own? I have learned about it in HS but could probably learn alot more on a college level course if I had to take it.
If you have studied it on your on, I congratulate you because you have more curiousity and free time than I do. I have not even studied my own background enough to 'learn nothing' in a univeristy level course.

In my twenty years, I've lived in three very different parts of the world, and I had to adjust to each and get familiar with it as much as possible. I live in a predominately Black and Hispanice neighborhood here in NYC, Junior High and High School, combined, made up 80% of the student body. I was very much a minority there and in my neighborhood, so given these circumstances I became very familiar with their lifestyle. This is as far as I'm willing to go with this.

Are there any black students in your class? or women in the women's class? At a University level one of the nicest things is being able to learn from others, not just the lecturer. I know in my classes I've learned just as much from my class mates than from the teachers... and more from my classmates in certain instances and that's not a knock on the teacher.
There's no amount of research that can replace the real thing. Do people read about sky diving and say, hmmm that sounds fun I bet it is and then hold the opinion that its fun? No, they form an opinion about and then test it by jumping out of a plane. Of course skydiving is stupid (why jump out of a perfectly working plane?) but so is an approach to subjects that you've not experienced which eliminates any chance of you learning anything new simply because you've "done some research."
I wasn't ignorant about Black Americans prior to attending an HBCU, but I can tell you I understand a helluva lot more about them now having attended one and *on the surface* being accepted by Black Americans as one of their own. I also know more about Africans as well cuz I got to be friends with alot of West Africans who also went to my school.

I'm not going to press you, but I still find that hard to believe. Obviously they aren't teaching anything new in these classes then. out
edit: hard to believe that you have nothing to learn. Obviously its one of those trash classes were you just memorize stuff, and you are saying that its stuff anyone who has lived in your situation would know, so I figured I understand.

I have plenty to learn, but in other subjects, I'm interested in anthropology, asian cultures, and film for example, which I'm willing to take any day. It's just those twp particular subjects which are irritating and seemingly worthless. Who knows, maybe the professors and the syllabi are just poorly organized.

Whilst taking a shower, I realized what you were talking about and I agree now. Except I think English Comp was useless for me. Do you go to an HBCU or some equivalent or something that they make you take that class in specific as opposed to a selection of humanities for instance in my curriculum?

I go to a CUNY(city university of new york) and they intemplate something called the CORE requirements, since NY is so diverse, everyone has to take classes about different ethnicities. I think this is a tremendously stupid idea. Like jono said, students learn more from each other than from lectures and books. And since My school is one of the most diverse in the world, students constantly interact, Arabs with French, Chinese with Brazilians and that's wonderful, they're already learning from themselves.
Making up these requirements is just a way from the gov't to show that it appreciates diversity and in making CUNY schools teach them, that the education system embraces it.
As for myself and many other students, it's nothing but pretentious bullsh!t, all that we get out of this is that they're telling us we need classes n order to learn about different cultures and ethnicities, we're too stupid to learn on our own therefore we need professors to make us open up textbooks and write about it. Do you understand what i'm trying to say?

It falls under the African diversity category. I already took African Literature last semester (which I enjoyed extremely) but for some reason it ended up not counting .

Just wait until the day when nothing comes in the mail except bills (and the monthly Playboy ;) ). You will be wishing for the days of science fair problems.

picture everybody in the audience is naked... and looks like Maria Sharapova :p

He already had that suggestion, I think that he might get arrested for public obscenity. :D
In other news, I fell whilst attempting to board a sloped sit up machine today and was thougharoly (sp) embarrassed, though I played it cool.

Or I might get a horde of female followers that would protect me against my arresters.
Thoroughly. That is a tough word to spell.
