were staying with some reletives there, and are going to travel to cologne on the 20th and stay there for 5 days or so. Were going to take day trips to Dortmund, Amsterdam maybe a few other places (were flexible with the amount of time there) and then were going to spend the rest of time in Berlin. coming back to Frankfurt on the 2nd to be able to fly home on the 3rd. Were staying with relatives the whole time but there like 21 so that will probably be an advantage.
has anyone here been to or heard of cuxhaven, i want to go there for a day and see where my parents came from and my family as well. If anyone has been there is it worth the long train ride and day trip?

I got a B+ on a really tough English paper from an amazingly tough English professor. The best grade in the class was an A- , and there was only one of those. I'm in the upper echelon baby!!! :D

You bought tickets 4 months in advance and had to pay almost $1K? That's a serious rip-off.

yeah i know thats a little steep, but ive been looking around for ever and couldnt find anything better. It probably has to do with the amount of traffic going to Germany and the fact its mid june. I'd rather fly into a nice euro city then iceland, but hey im going to germany i'll live lol

You could've done better by waiting until about 2 months before (the prices usually dip as the airlines try to fill up completely), but I don't think you could get it lower than $750 inclusive depending on where you're coming from, not for summer travel. You did alright.
It sure beats the $1600 I paid last summer for an "emergency" trip to Italy in July, booked 3 weeks in advance. That still hurts :(

When I grow up, I'm gonna be one of those tough english professors. Right now, I'm too easy; I don't have time for all the lawsuits, parental harrassment, and bullshit that comes with failing students. But someday, when I have tenure, they won't be able to stop me: "Comma error, minus ten!!" MWUHAHAHAHA. . . .
Oh, who am I kidding, I'll still be easy :p I like getting those good evaluations and tearful student testimonials at the end of the semester too much. Oh, and apples, lots of apples.

No Saph, you're only encouraging subpar American education. You have to be strict and actually make your students learn something, instead of just taking it easy, chances are more students will be encouraged to slack off and not learn anything in the end.

I am well-loved by my students, I think because I am fair to them. I also give lots of time to them outside of class, and keep the classroom atmosphere relaxed and conversational -- since most of my classes focus on discussion anyway.
Seriously what I do is I teach a really really tough syllabus. There's lots of reading and lots of writing work. It's not too hard to pass the class if you do most of the work, but it's time consuming and difficult -- that's what I really want is for them to do the work. I don't care if you're an "A student" in every other english class you've ever taken, you have to WORK in my class, but you will be rewarded if you work. It's a bit unconventional, but I think students actually learn more that way. Anyway, I always have a large percentage of drops every semester. Those that stick around and do the work tend to get into the class I think, and they get lots of Bs and only a handful of Cs. A few As every semester, a few students that can't cut it. I also don't have the students compete against each other; I've taught classes where no one made an A, and classes where half the class made As. Anyway, I feel that a student that reads 12 novels, writes 10 short papers and one research paper, and comes to class every period (mandatory attendence :D ) deserves a high passing grade if they complete their work satisfactorily, in most cases. In fact, most of my students that make Cs rather than Bs do so because they missed an assignment or some such thing. If I'm doing my job, they've gotten enough info from my class to warrant 3 credit hours.
I'd thought I'd explain, just so you understand I don't shortchange my students. But my grades do tend to be higher and I do get good evaluations.
